16 Unicorn Street, Sunday Evening

Jan 27, 2008 15:20

Tensions were getting higher at the Winchester house as the day wore on. The protections on the house had been strengthened as much as any of them knew how, and triple-checked to make sure they were complete. In the nursery, Grace was sleeping in her crib, blissfully unaware of everything that was going on. Downstairs, everyone else was waiting, to ( Read more... )

Maybe the protections could be quadruple-checked.

Dawn was standing in front of the door, debating whether to knock or to just walk in. Then she remembered she didn't have a key, and that the Winchesters were bound to be a little bit twitchy about people just walking in. Her cell phone wouldn't be any use as a warning, since both Sam and Dean would probably hang up and never open the door to let her into the house.

She shouldered her bag--a stop at her room (and maybe a short nap, long shower, and change of clothes) had yielded a copy of the exorcism rite, which she'd written out on her hand, and a trip to the weapons locker had ended with her having a supersoaker full of holy water and a dagger, which she'd tied to her leg.

Speaking of tying, her hair was back and braided neatly under. There was no point in giving the demon something to grab onto. A quick glance down at herself verified that she was as close to battle-ready as she ever was.

Knocking it was, then. God, Sam was going to kill her.

She used her fist and pounded on the door. "Not a demon!"

Sam looked up from where he was perched on the couch, sharpening one of his knives. He'd know that voice anywhere, and knew it shouldn't be here. Setting his knife on the table, he went to the door, peering through the spyhole first to make sure it really was Dawn, and then opened the door.

"You have got to be the most stubborn person I've ever met in my life," he said. "What the hell are you doing here?"

"Second most," she said, chin set, "and I'm doing my homework. From 2006."

Zoe was getting pretty damn tired of the waiting game, but it seemed like all they could do for the moment. She and John had gone upstairs first, to Grace's room, and she couldn't resist going over to stand by the crib. She would be damned if anything got hold of her baby girl, and she wasn't sure if the demon being in Alec would stop her from taking action if it was necessary. Somehow, the presence of Karal's cat wasn't making her feel entirely better either.

Altra prowled over to stand next to her, not at all happy about being separated from Karal, but the boy had insisted.

At some point, as he'd stalked restlessly around the room, he'd dropped the magic that made him look small. His head was level with Zoe's hip as he looked up at her. :If it comes to the worse, I can Jump you both to Karse. The demon is not going to touch your child.:

Zoe took a deep breath, trying to reassure herself at Altra's words. "That'll be safe for her? She's still so young."

For anyone who's left standing around.

Alec was indeed still standing around, though he'd moved slightly more towards the door as if judging when would be the best time to leave without drawing undue attention.

And Karal checked on Dawn and Altra, took a deep breath, hauled himself to his feet, and went to lean on the wall near Alec. Leaning was necessary at this point. "You don't need to leave," he said quietly. Even with a pounding head, he'd been able to tell that much. "None of this was your fault." He offered his hand as if making a point. "I'm Karal, from Karse."

Glancing at Karal's hand, he shook his head briefly, but did finally take it - though the feeling was a little grudging. "Alec. And I kind of beg to differ," he said, with a humorless smile.
