15 texture makers I couldn't live without

Apr 10, 2011 22:02

annadelko ask me for a post about my favourite textures. I've never done a thing like this, and I'm not sure it's going to be helpful to you, but here it is!

First of all: I have lots of textures, and my texture directory is a mess. I don't use any form of categorization, so folders are not divided by makers, or type, or anything. I don't know how to explain it in English, but I just sort the folder in a chronological order from the older batches to the most recent ones I downloaded (it's a Windows option, something like 'sort by last change').
That being said, I don't follow any proper rule when choosing a texture. Sometimes I go for the ones I use more often, some other times I scroll the folder 'till something catches my attention, and sometimes I just go random: I scroll the folder, open a directory and pick the less workable texture to see if I'm able to do something with it. Sometimes I look for a specific color, sometimes for a specific composition. There are textures I probably never used, and textures I used a lot.
This is by no means a guide on how to use textures. This is a mess in which I try to tell you which are my favourite textures and what I like about them. Hope you'll enjoy it. :)

Here you can find my resources list. It may be incomplete, so please, let me know if I forgot to credit anyone's work.
Now, I'll try to make a list of my favourite texture makers. It doesn't mean they're the best texture makers out there, though. It's a matter of tastes here. I'm picking those ones whose textures I use more often, and that's all.

I like her textures because they're colorful, soft, and bright. They're very useful to add some vibrancy and some lighting, especially when set to Soft Light or Overlay (but Overlay can have quite extreme outcomes). You can also use them to make your negative space more interesting and texturized, for example.

cookiestome @DA and @satin_resonance
Examples:

Her textures are very creative and versatile, not to mention inspiring. Every texture is different, so there's no obvious way to use them.

deny1984 @midnight_road
Examples:

I usually work with her 'less extreme' textures, like the first three I posted. She makes gorgeous colorful textures, and I'm using them a lot on Screen, lately. They add interesting shades to shadows, but you may need to mask them a bit, or to lower the opacity. But she also makes some crazy stuff - like the last two examples - and I wish I could be able to use that kind of texture as well without screwing things up! :D (actually, I think I've never used those two, but I love them)

drankmywar @defaultsettings
Examples:

Colorful, bright, saturated textures. Always handy. (be careful, though: when working with close crops, they might modify the lights/shadows scheme a little too much)

emonet25 @grafixed_art and @DA
Examples:

Maybe my favourite texture maker. I think I have all of her sets, and I use her textures a lot. They're very useful to make subtle changes to the coloring and the lighting. Believe me or not, this is the kind of textures I use the most. Pale, soft, lovely textures. ♥

ina_ami @true_fellings

I like her pastel color textures (especially the light blue ones) as well as her decorative/colorful ones. They all belong to a compilation she made a while ago, and it's a very useful set of textures.

innocent_lexys @infinite_muse
Examples:

She makes gorgeous bright textures with primary colors, mostly, but her decorative textures are lovely and useful as well. I fell in love with the second one, recently, it does wonders to borders, if set to Screen.

lemonpunch @lemonpunch
Examples:

I love her b/w textures. She also makes colorful/decorative textures, of course, but her b/w ones are amazing. Very handy if you want to add some proper texture to your background, or to create some bright spots.

mayush17 @light_fumes

Another very versatile texture maker. Great decorative textures as well as lovely coloful/soft ones. And yes, the last example I posted is one of my favourite texture at the moment. Can't stop using it :D

nivani @thest_one

Great decorative textures. Useful to add some intriguing detail or to add some extra-interest to the composition of an icon.

nokitas @aube_des_arts

Aw, the colors! I never get tired of this kind of textures, and maybe you've realized by now. :D
However, she also makes very interesting decorative textures, but I can't find those packs for the life of me. Go check her graphics comm!

ohfreckle @oh_freckle and DA
Examples:

Well, I believe every icon maker knows her and has at least one of her pack of textures. Her colorful textures are amazing.

pandavirus @welt_herrschaft
Examples:

I've only recently discovered her gorgeous textures and now I'm using them a lot - at least, I try to, they can be quite tricky to work with because they tend to be a tad overwhelming and difficult to integrate into the icon! :D

spooky_window @spooky-window
Examples:

The first three are from a textures set I use a lot when I need some kind of frame texture. But she also makes gorgeous colorful textures, like the the last three, and you should check her lj because there are many beautiful batches to snag!

xscintillatex @fupunu
Examples:

Again, lovely decorative textures. Very interesting to work with, especially when creating complex icons - which I seldom do, I know. :)

There are many more texture makers I like, and whose work I appreciate. Thank you guys, even if I didn't include you in this list. THANK YOU FOR SHARING! ♥ ♥ ♥
