Hey all. I'm fairly new to Psych and I'm hideously confused about something. Please send help.

I read both gen and slash in Psych fandom, and I keep seeing something pop up in gen fic that doesn't appear to exist in the slash. No, not like that. :D ( Read more... )

He does appear to have a scar on his chest that could have been a result from open-heart surgery (that seems to be the popular guess). As far as I know, James himself has never addressed this, but there are caps from Psych that reveal the scar. Here's one. :)

No problem! And if it wasn't for the fic and people talking about it on another board, I'd probably never notice it for myself lol.

Like the commenter below, it hasn't been made a part of Shawn's character, but for whump's sake, I hope they do lol.

Yay the whump! The third season has been pretty good to us, whump-wise, but I admit I can't really see the scar factoring comfortably into the canon at this point. :(

I am curious as to why it's referenced so often in the gen fic, though, and not at all in the more adult-oriented stuff where people are always... well. Taking their clothes off. *facepalm*

I've seen every ep, and that has never come up on the show. So, unless it was some really small throw away mention that I missed, it's not canon. (I'm VERY observant mind you.)

That's a fanon thing. Are you reading a lot of hurt/comfort types of fics?

Edit: I just looked at the pic above. James Roday has a scar, but it hasn't been discussed on the show.

HA. Yeah, I do like the h/c, and I had assumed the scar's origin at least was fanon since there's never been reference made to it on the show. But the pic in the comment upthread does seem to show a scar, so hey. ;)

HAHA, that seemed like a very H/C type of concept. lol

So yeah, James has a scar. They're probably just going to ignore it on the show. They have so far. I mean, open heart surgery doesn't really fit into Psych or Shawn's backstory. It's kind of like when Debra Messing was pregnant on Will and Grace. It was obvious, but everyone ignored it. :P

You know, you're right. The scar (and any mention of it) does seem to be lacking in the slash department. Though, to be honest, slash stories usually don't have a lot of whump either. They make up for it with lots and lots of hot sex, generally.

That image above, the one of Shawn, really surprised me. They've come pretty close to showing the audience his full chest but they've stopped short every time... Seems to be the case yet again. Come on! You can see right there how fine and well-developed it is! Psych-writers, don't leave us hanging!

Your question's been answered, but just so you know, there's an excellent fic over at Psychfic.com that deals with the concept of Shawn getting open heart surgery when he's about 4 years old. It's by collegekid06, who is a fabulous author, and it's called I Need This Like I Need A Hole in the Heart. Very good stuff.

I was mainly just surprised that it never gets mentioned at all in the slash, considering how Shawn is so frequently wandering about in the naked. :D

His chest! Is pretty! It can't be that Roday has any reluctance, surely - he got his gear off for that stoner movie, iirc. But Shawn wore a wetsuit in a POOL. That's just not fair.

Also, I'm loving that fic! Every time there's an update I do a little dance. *g*
