Well that's kind of normal. It ussually happens when people are out of town, sick... I understand that Strom Thurmand missed quite a bit of legislature when he was in his 90's and 100's and some of the people there are rather old.

What struck me as weird though was the 2 senators who voted against confirming Gates as new defense secretary. It seems that the entire congress was very much relieved to hear that Rumsfield's adventure was going to be taken over by someone new. It was Rick Santorum and this fellow from georgia who apparently was very weird on the campaign trail and almost got voted out in favor of a democrat.

Sick is fine...not so sure about being out of town being legitimate. They *are* supposed to be doing their jobs of running the country, after all. Time off outside of recesses seems a bit inappropriate outside of emergencies.

Yeah, they certainly got used to perks. Apparently the last congress took so leisurely of a schedual that they had more time off then a "do nothing" congress in 1948 (so the newspaper says). They only worked 103 days and didn't even managed to fund the government spending bills that run things like the post office, maybe they've managed that by now.

They are working 5 days a week when they return. I like Hoyer already (the maryland house majority leader). :P
