A forty-five-second jog from the loading dock behind Ho’s Electronic Emporium to the shop’s street-level entrance.
Twenty-nine carpeted steps down to the carved paneled doors.
Twelve strides through the hanging haze of incense to where D always sat, eyes lowered, hands folded.
Thirty-four inches to lift D to his feet by the front of his robe.
Six inches to bring their mouths together.
When he thought of it that way, it didn’t seem so far at all. But it might as well have been from the earth to the moon.
