Impatience of Dishonor
Time for my submission to the second quarterly Nerd Collective Mix List exchange. By request of neverendingjim, a music mix inspired by the life and legend of Alcibiades.
Opinions on the man throughout history are rather mixed. His existence was listed as one of Socrates's crimes in the Apologia, yet Aristotle uses his example to state that a proud man has the traits of "equanimity amid the vicissitudes of life and impatience of dishonor". He was run out of Athens on (possibly false) charges of blasphemy, waged war against his home city first from Sparta and then from Persia, and finally came home to serve as a ranking Athenian general (...until he was defeated and killed under mysterious circumstances). And one thing you can definitely say, is that Athens was never out of his thoughts.
Nor, if his notoriety is to be taken at face value, was he ever far from the thoughts of the city. In The Frogs, Aristophanes says that the city of Athens "yearns for him, and hates him too, but wants him back"... and would Aristophanes lie? That statement was so like the attitude one could see arching through Alcibiades's own actions that one of my themes in picking the songs below was, with very few exceptions, to look for music that could be aligned with either party's point of view. And thus, you have my musical description of the torrid romance between two of the most prideful things history has known: an Athenian and his city.
