After Radiohead's announcement recently that they are currently not in a recording contract and will be releasing their next album themselves (online for as much or as little as you wish to pay, and also in collectors box set and a CD version to follow later) tomorrow October 10th, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails has just announced that after 18 years in a record contract - that he has made no bones about despising - he is a free agent and presumably will be releasing music by himself, online, as he has talked about doing for years now.
Lots of unsigned bands have been following this approach for quite a while, selling through iTunes and competitors. It's pretty cool that they are now on a leveller playing field with massive artists like Radiohead and NIN.
