Um.... shouldn't there be a bit more of an opt-in policy in place here? I mean, I know I can chose to ignore it if I want, but its a bit of an invasive cheeky thing to do without my prior knowledge or consent.

Surely you opt in by configuring your client to use LJ's server. I don't see where the intrusion is.

The automatic importation of ALL of the friends list. There are some on there who are closer than others. And a number I do not want to have the opportunity to pester me over an IM.

Presumably you can edit it, though.

Dumb question: do you have any clue how I might go about making my firewall allow port 5222? You probably need more information to be able to tell me but I am so ignorant I don't even know what parameters you might need.

I have connected to the LJ Jabber via meebo.com, which is an http interface to various IM systems. But I feel rather uncomfortable putting my LJ username and password into a site that I know nothing about, and being able to run a client from my desktop would obviously be better.

How to operate your firewall will depend on what it is. Is it hardware or software, and if so, what model/version? Do you mean outgoing or incoming connections?

I think I have a software firewall called Norton Internet Security. I am not sure whether I have a hardware firewall as well but I think not. I don't know whether I mean outgoing or incoming; at the moment my Jabber client will not connect to the LJ server because it says 5222 is blocked by the firewall. I assume I'd need both so people can talk to me, but I don't really know.

I added 5222 to the HTTP port list, which was the only relevant option I could find by playing around, but that doesn't seem to have made any difference.
