Well, it won't change my usage either, though I suspect the reasons for this are slightly different...
I'm not surprised you were at odds with a colleague over it, though, given your current location. I was informed once by a classicist who'd done some philology that the 'ise' spelling is a Tabbish invention, whereas 'ize' is the proper True (Dark) Blue Oxonian way.
