It's probably after I stopped reading the Xanth series. Oddly, I don't think Xanth stopped me reading Piers' stuff, it was how silly his Incarnations of Immortality series got, at least for me. I like magic and all, but there can be such a thing as too much magic, when it becomes a Deus Ex Machina (sometimes literally) for just about every situation. Plus, I think I discovered Gaiman's "Death" and never looked back. :)
Zombies were a bit different in Xanth, weren't they? I mean, I know they were corpses, and that the magician (called The Zombie Master, wasn't it?) could make them. He turned himself into one, I think, and then he and his wife (who was also dead) were restored. Is this book about him?
I saw your link above about the man (Jim C. Hines) who tries to capture poses of women from fantasy covers - I happen to have signed copies of his books, due in large part to the fact that I work with his mother at a local veterinary hospital. I recommend giving his books a shot, if you happen across them. They're pretty good, especially the Goblin books.
I think I would be more infuriated that of all the things that could make two political parties come together for a moment of kumquat, it's something that most politicians still think are a bunch of tubes.
Since about 90% of the piracy comes from China, Philippines and where ever the hell Pirate Bay's servers are this week (I hear it's on a boat, floating out on International Waters), it really may take the UN to figure out how to stop online piracy. And Lord only knows if some of those countries even have the Internet.
It's also a problem with media companies not adapting to things that may not be possible to stop. A lot of content producers (webcomics, musicians, Louis CK's recent concert video sale online) have found that they can make really good money just putting stuff out there and letting people decide what they want to pay and if they want to pay for it. This happens with piracy as well, as the Dead Gentlemen discovered that whenever someone uploaded their hit movie, The Gamers to YouTube, they saw a spike in DVD sales.
I think what really has a lot of media companies scared is the thought that with the internet's means of delivering content to consumers without all those guys in suits and corner offices, a lot of them are going to find themselves redundant. There'll always be (for lack of a better term) "Big Media," but I can't see how a lot of record companies will be able to keep their current management staff levels the way they are for much longer, unless their lawsuits and lawmakers pay off.
