Lots of retailers at GenCon had the Square dongle thingy and they all seemed to be quite fond of it. (One person had reception issues but they thought it was more of just a problem of being in a bad coverage spot...)
I'm told that if you're willing to risk it (and so is your customer), you can do a rubbing of the credit card or use one of those kchunk-kchunk machines to get their info and upload it later.
It does make finding out if your table is in a dead-zone a priority. Has anyone ever invented a cell phone antenna booster that works, other than those AT&T node-things they charge a ton for?
It's quite good. I've been using it at shows this year and never again do i have to turn down plastic. The only caveat is that if you do $1000 or more in one go they hang on to the cash till they can verify the sale, which ends up being about 30 days. Tony

Holy crap, I remember those ball-shaped radios! Cool kids had them - I did not. Partly (ok, maybe mostly) because I was not a cool kid, but also, I recall them getting CRAP for reception and being hard to tune in above and beyond that. They do look cool though!
