I can't say too much about Corn Stalker myself, given that one of the Champions Online characters I have waiting in the wings is a Fire/Might character that's hulkish, has flaming red Vegeta-hair...and a pink shirt with a heart on it. He goes by the name of Flaming Troll. ;-) And then there's Flayah Flay, the Illithid Rock Star....
I do so love Champions' character creation. And the fact that you can get any name you want, even as a duplicate. There's nothing worse than making a martial arts character with huge feet and making the Celtic Cross chest symbol into an Iron Cross only to find the name "Das Boot" is taken.
Yup--I like how you can mix-and match abilities as you like (with a few limitations) as opposed to being locked into a single powerset. And the name thing is indeed useful, since the name is 'actually' 'Character@username' rather than just 'Character'. Around the Anniversary I remember seeing someone named 'Sentinel' or some such...and then turning around and not but a few feet away was another 'Sentinel' :-)
Kudos to the Croyd Crenson reference! While it got over the top in a few issues (nigh X-rated) the series was a great read. You ever read the 6 book series called 'The Fleet'? It was out about the same time (late 80's - early 90's).
I only read the novels, up through the 13th (I think), where they were supposedly starting a new trilogy cycle and the print run got sparse. I've seen a few of the comic book issues; is that where "The Fleet" is from?

People all scrambled to play Wolverine or Night Crawler, but I found that Dazzler was one of the most challenging, and most fun characters to play. Her melee combat skills were on par with Wolverines, and her photon bomb was great for clearing significant areas of the screen.

I always played Nightcrawler simply because Nightcrawler is my favorite X-Man, but after the game had been out for a while, people thought I was being lame. I actually just found that game "in the wild" a few weeks ago while on vacation (the four-player version, not the legendary six-player), and played it a bit with my son. As it turns out, Nightcrawler really is amazing.
Cards and roleplaying - Torg anyone?

You remember Torg, do you? If not, go read the three novels, then play the P&P RPG. It was one of the best of its king (supernatural/sci-fi/elseworld setting) and it is one of only a few "finished" RPGs out there - once the team printed everything they wanted to, they released a few good fan-ideas and declared the whole thing complete.
And - it had cards which allowed the players to mess with the great ideas of th GM as they saw fit - so you had to be very inventive and stress-resistant GM :D
Gamma World Cards

I've bought the game and several boosters. I vaguely remember Gamma World from back in the day so I dont remember much for comparison other than the known tropes. The 4E Gamma World is the only one that is supposed to use cards so it should not be considered indicative of the direction of 4E D&D. The cards provides a whimsical random way of determining a special power (typically an Encounter Power). Players may construct their own deck or may draw from the GM's deck. New powers are drawn every encounter unless something lets you keep the power. Constructing your own deck allows you to refine the flavor of your character's potential powers. The back-story of the new Gamma Terra is that the Particle Collider experiment went 'wrong'. The event now 150 years later is simple known as 'The Big Mistake' pulled all the assorted multi/parallel universes together onto Gamma Terra to create the assorted mutations and tech and what not. That's a quick summery and is in response to the uncertainty of if booster packs of cards are the future of
