"Hey Benny."

Ray tried to swallow. His throat was like glue. His lips were dry, and so was his tongue. The air felt sharp, as if it was cutting him as he breathed.

"Yes, Ray." Fraser's arms around him tightened a little. He was warm, solid. Ray was so glad that Fraser was holding him right now.

"Do you think you could ever die some way that it didn't hurt?"

The sky was light blue, dusted over with faint clouds. The sun was turning them bright, so it hurt to look up. He thought about closing his eyes, to shut out the glare, but he knew that was a bad idea right now.

"No, Ray," whispered Fraser. "I think it always hurts. I don't - I don't know." His voice was faltering. "I don't think it hurts afterward."

Ray's mouth curved a little, hitching at the corners.

"You're not Catholic," he grated. Then he coughed, and the spasms wrenched through him, tearing and burning. For a moment, all the sensation flooded back, and he felt everything: the incredible white-hot pain in his gut, the tingling in his legs, the way the blood was seeping through his shirt and his pants, the fabric clinging wetly to his skin. And he could feel Fraser's fingers digging into his arms, feel Fraser curving around him, holding him close, trying to protect him.

Then the coughing stopped, and his body went limp again, and he could still feel it all, but it seemed further away.

"I'm cold," he muttered. He felt Fraser pull him closer, pull him up into Fraser's own lap, and he felt Fraser's face press against his.

His eyes must have closed. He couldn't see the sky any more.

"Ray," came Benny's voice in his ear. He could feel tears that weren't his trickling down his face. "Ray, don't go. Don't leave me."

"Ah, Benny," he said. Or he wanted to say. Had he said it? "Benny?"

"I'm here. I'm here, Ray."
