The night they won the Mutizen award, Super Junior was in hysterics. On stage, the only person not sobbing miserably was HeeChul, but he was the MC and it would have been bad for the MC to lose composure like that.
Backstage, the one who cried hardest was DongHae. EeTeuk found him outside, seated on the steps, sobbing so hard his shoulders were shaking. But when the band leader came over to "comfort" him, there was a big, though somewhat watery, smile on his lips.
"Happy tears?" EeTeuk asked, taking a seat next to the other boy, a little surprised when DongHae leaned against him. But he didn't miss a beat, moving his arm around the younger boy's shaking shoulders.
DongHae nodded, sniffling and reaching up to wipe at his eyes. These were very happy tears indeed. "It was worth it," he finally murmured.
EeTeuk nodded, eyes turning to the sky. "You can call them tomorrow, you know. I'm sure they'll be proud." He was the only one who knew DongHae's secret. But then, he was the one who held him at night when it simply got to be too difficult to bear.
DongHae nodded. "I will. It's been a while since I've...I've talked to umma. But she'll be happy to hear about this."
There was a silence as they sat there, DongHae leaning against EeTeuk and EeTeuk's arm around DongHae's shoulder, holding him close.
It was indeed worth it, and when DongHae thought about it, it wasn't really that bad. He'd left his family behind to pursue his own dreams, but he'd found a type of surrogate family that cared for him as much as his natural one did.
