[Since they've only spoken over the phone, Lithuania doesn't recognize her on sight. Still, she does look like she's not a drone, at least.]

Good morning, miss.

[The look on his face when she mentions Russia...]

A-ah, yes, I know both of them. They live very close to me at home.

(The look on Mr Lithuania's face raises a few more questions on Miss Pauling's part. But for now, she'll stick to the obvious.)

The three of you...are you really the personifications of the countries in your world?

We are. My full name in English is the Republic of Lithuania. More accurately, we represent our people--I was the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and half of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth as well, amongst other names.

(And that would probably explain why he freaked out when she mentioned Mr Russia. She knows enough of world history and current world events in her world to know that the USSR had not been treating the Baltic nations as well as it proclaimed it was.)

Wow. That's...quite frankly speaking, very amazing. No offence meant, but you must have lived through quite a few decades. Are all countries in your world represented by personifications as well?

I'm about 2000 years old, yes. Every nation has a personification. We have world meetings and the like.

That's...a long time to be alive.

So all the personifications get together to solve world problems? You world must be a lot more peaceful than mine then; world leaders in my home can't ever seem to agree on anything.

...Well... We have bosses and governments that do the decision-making for the most part. We can come up with ideas but we do what our people decide. And it's not as if all of us can agree about many things, either...

Ah...I see...

Speaking of which, the personification of the USSR called me the other day. It was...an interesting conversation, to say the least. He offered me his assistance if I was ever in trouble. Ms Ukraine is a very nice woman as well; though the idea of a country running a flower shop is still a bit, umm, difficult for me to imagine. However, she was very kind to speak with me.

Russia is from 1812, actually, so he's not the USSR yet. Still, you should be careful when you speak to him. He's--unpredictable. Ah, but Miss Ukraine is much nicer than her brother. Is he still the USSR in your world?

1812...so he's still the Russian Empire then...is he from after Napolean then?

(She makes a mental note to stay away from Mr Russia if she can help it...)

Well, yes, he is. The Cold War is still going on back home, but no one can tell whether there's going to be a real war or not.

You're from a future time then, Mr Lithuania? I'm from 1968.

I didn't ask him. I'm from 2011, though, and the Soviet Union has dissolved. I left in 1990. There was no war as such, at least not in my world.

Really? That's really surprising. Most people thought that the USSR was going to start the next World War. It's good to know that it ended without any bloodshed, I guess.

So, what do you do in Mayfield then? Is it very different to be a human instead of a personification?

[He's not going to comment on the bloodshed thing.]

I've gotten my regular nation self back, but Mayfield has me working at the bakery. I'm not sure if it was really that different--I wasn't so worried about all of my people. Well, I was, but it was hard to think about all of them like I usually can.

Nation self? I'm sorry, but I don't really understand.

(Aaaaaaand the Nation of Lithuania works at a bakery. Next thing she's going to hear is that the United States of America works as a teacher in the school.)

Well, we're not human, not exactly. I don't age, you can't really kill me like you could kill a human, and it's--well, I suppose most people can't worry simultaneously about three million people, but I can.
