List fail and Best Sci-fi/Genre MOTHERS.

Jun 18, 2010 22:22

So, the other day, I was failing in an attempt to come up with a list of important mother/daughter relationships, and today, we have this list of fail with Best. TV. Fathers. With people like William Adama (WTF!) and KYLE REESE on it. And MAGNETO ( Read more... )

AHA. Roommate says Dom's mama was Beatrice.

And on the side of good:
Rachel, Olivia Dunham's sister on Fringe has a daughter (she's a minor character, sadly).

I FIND IT HILARIOUS THAT WE BOTH POSTED ABOUT THIS AT PRACTICALLY THE SAME TIME.

Heh, I noted that, too, yes. <3

Actually, Mags is on the Worst Dads list.

I'm totally going to let my error stand because it's funnier this way. *fails.* I mean, Magneto has still contributed more to their lives than Kyle did to John's? ;)

I had forgotten about Adama's deathbed adoption of Kat and Dee. Which just proves my point about dead women being more important in narratives!

I added Jean and then got a headache trying to remember all the continuity bits and then unadded, but since you confirmed this, we shall add her back. I really, really wish we could get more Jean/Rachel interaction because they were incredibly interesting.

I...was going to add Xhalax to my GOOD mothers' list? Of course, my fictional moral compass sucks, and I often confuse INTERESTING with...good. *contemplates*

I should edit and add a list for bad mothers, possibly.

Xhallax is hard to place, because without her "WE LUV U, AERYN" moment, Aeryn would be a different person.

IDK.

Flip a coin? (I mean, that's the way I am about Maddie, too. Beatrice and Socrata otoh, not so much)

Well, it's bad for the *world.* But she tried her best with the parenting DESPITE having birthed the spawn of the devil. So, good parenting. <3

Jessica Atredis is a way better mom than Leto Atredis is a dad. I mean, first of all, Leto dies pretty fast and gets almost no scenes with Paul in the book, while Jessica trains Paul against the rules in the magical Bene Gesserit witch ways, which boys aren't even supposed to learn. And then she dons a stilsuit and helps him beat up some dudes in the desert. And then she becomes the new Reverend Mother of the Fremen, one of their highest leaders, securing herself and her son a place in the tribe and ultimately in the world. And then she goes on to train a whole army for him.

If that isn't a great mom I don't know what is.

Also, Pearl is a great mom. I kind of want to see Bonnie's Grams on that list too but I guess she isn't really Bonnie's mother figure so that's kind of too bad. (But Matt's mom probably belongs on the worst mom list. x.x)

OH, Jessica Atredis sounds absolutely awesome (especially since I'm sort of fangirling Sarah Connor these days), and "Dune" just moved up my to-watch list. Thank you.

Do the various TV/movie adaptations focus on her much?

I'm a bit reluctant to put Matt's mom on the worst moms list because the show so clearly wants me to dislike her? And Matt's man pain makes me react by liking her to spite him. ;) But yes, she would probably fit in there.

I think the Miniseries is a little more focused on her and her stuff, but that's because the David Lynch movie is kind of a big ol' mess and basically requires an intimate knowledge of the story (like having seen the mini and/or having read the book.)

Eh, that's kind of true. I felt like they wanted her to be that way to explain Vicki a little, and maybe to build up sympathy for Matt to explain why he was a jerk to Caroline (though that was kind of a mutual argument.)

I'm over here after lyssie mentioned you were doing this and THANK YOU! <3

I don't recognize all of these, but I very much agree with the ones I do. And since I think Adama and Kyle Reese are the icing of ridiculousness on this, how much do I love what you have to say about them here? LOTS.

Oh! So much icon love. <3

Adama is an entirely fail example, but Kyle Reese just...does not qualify as a father at all.

Magneto was a father?! He seems so undad-like

Does Tess count as a mom even though we only saw her with Zan for one episode?

He is totally un-dad like and has tried to seduce all his children in one way or another at some point. This is only part of why I love him so much.:)

And yes, Tess totally counts.

Plus, she did totally stab everyone in the back and lied to people for years JUST TO HAVE THAT BABY! ;) /bitter

I would've been so uncomfortable if they kept that SL in the X-men movies.

LMAO what an evil person that Tess is...*rolls eyes*
