I've seen all but the last two episodes of this (which are waiting patiently on my external for me), and while I think it's generally a very well handled show, I have to say it's Rebecca Locke who keeps me from loving it. I seem to be the odd one out on that, but I just... I could like her character if done by another actress, I think. I find the actress who plays her incredibly wooden and her voice too flat. It just doesn't click for me. (I simply love Katie Finneran and Adam Baldwin in it though.)

I felt the same way about Rebecca the first time I watched it, but "The Inside" is one of those shows that works better on rewatch, and Rebecca makes a lot more sense after the finale. Which is not to say she'll work for you, but I'm incredibly fond of Rachel Nichols now and I have "The Inside" to thank for it. I don't think any other actress could've captured the creepy quietness of Rebecca's insanity as well.

That definitely makes sense... and also means I need to get my behind in motion and see the last two eps. lol I often find that on re-watching, my opinion on characters changes a fair bit.

Yes, you do. :) I possibly like Rebecca more every time I rewatch. Rachel Nichols is a capable actress, and Tim Minear knows what he's doing, so I trust that the acting thing is a conscious choice in terms of characterization and not a lack of skills, which makes me analyze it more than anything else.

It's such a shame that The Inside was so ignored, I was always struck by how little internet presence it had despite it's connection with Firefly fandom. I think that at a possibly unconscious level a lot of people are unhappy with crime tv shows which show long term consequences. The kind of shows like CSI and Criminal Minds which have murders being committed so the team can swoop in, capture the bad guys and bugger off again are incredibly popular but The Inside had Rebecca as the constant reminder that the survivors of terrible crimes were often irredeemably broken by it and there was never going to be a happily ever after. I think that that is why despite excellent writing and ostensible similarity to more popular fare it was quietly ignored by so many people.
Either that or Tim Minear has been cursed.

Yes, that. "The Inside," despite my ridiculous amount of love for it, is a very...uncomfortable show. It's not really about recovering as much as it's about showing all the ways that she's permanently damaged and will never really put the past behind her. Which is realistic, and harsh, and messed up, and I think Hollywood has conditioned most of the people to expect/want quick fixes.

I also suspect that a lot of people just don't get the depth and complexity of "The Inside" and just dismiss it as another crime show. As a crime show, it's actually kind of...predictable and not very good? But it's the character study/psychological thriller aspects underneath that make it so brilliant. And gah, I love it more every time I watch it, and then am sadder than the last time when I reach the finale.
