This is just great. It's a genre, too, that I am finally starting to realize is a genre - a fascinating one and of which this is a fascinating example. Not Kafka or Calvino or magic realist. Too realist to be magic. Too magic to be realist. I guess Magic Realism consists of two terms that unexpectedly attract each other -- unexpectedly except for the sense that it makes that opposite poles attract. Yours might be a magic realism where the two terms have the same polarity and it's hard and therefore powerful to hold them together.
