Some tea or something caffeinated might be a good idea. Flowers are a nice idea, but perhaps something practical? Like a gift basket. He likely won't be thinking of eating on his own very much.
Well, some snacks might be a nice idea. Something to keep his energy up while he's waiting. And you mentioned a book, that definitely wouldn't go amiss, I would think. Perhaps his dormmates would have a better idea of what he'd like...

There are a number of professors that can assist you with this. Try getting in contact with some of the military strategic professors, or maybe even talking to Dumbledore himself.
