If livejournal dies, what should I do? I'm backing up my content, but that won't help with the whole "loss of my network of friends" thing.

Well, LJ says the rumors of its demise have been greatly exaggerated, for what that's worth. But maybe if it does, we can all regroup on Wordpress or something.

I may fall back to Facebook for the personal bits, and Wordpress for the public ruminating. Wordpress doesn't have the sort of fine-grained privacy settings LJ does.
