I was standing outside of Subway talking with Jason, Joe, and Ed about larping and other such inconsequential things when something odd happened. A man walked up to us in ill-kept clothes and asked if we had any money to spare. The conversation stopped and nobody made eye contact with him except for me. I said "sure" and pulled out my wallet, ( Read more... )

Jill, one of the things I admire most in you is your generosity. Sure, it may be inconvenient. But it's the right thing in my humble opinion.

I used to always give money to strangers when they asked for it when I was in college, until one day one of my peer shamed me for doing it. Then I stopped. I became a little bit of a cynic. But actually seeing your generosity inspired me to shed that bit of cynicism. You've already made progress and didn't even know it. Keep it up. Some people may never follow your example. But that's ok. You don't have to convince the whole world or the lot of your friends to make a difference.

Jason would probably say that there are always programs, ways for people to continue without begging on the streets, that they are there because they choose to be. I think that's a little premature, it certainly seems possible that people can truly get the short end of the stick sometimes ( ... )

My view... personally I don't give money to beggars. Too many professional panhandlers out there who don't really deserve it. If they ask for something material, like food, I'll give them/buy them some if it's possible.

That said, I don't expect anyone else to play by the same rules I do. So I say fuck 'em. If Jason and Ed didn't agree with what you did, they should still know better than to talk down to you like a child. Just because you have different values doesn't make you immature/naive/whatever.
