pop culture consumption (jan - mar)

I've been meaning to talk about books I've been reading, movies I've been watching, and gigs I've been to like other awesome people on the flist, but I keep forgetting to do it monthly, so I promised littlerhymes I'd think about doing it quarterly. And I missed that date too, heh.

5. That's gross, but it reminds me that I originally picked that up a few years ago because I thought she was hot.
And yeah, I hated Dean too.

6. Hmm, I disliked After Eight, Mia was irritatingly immature in it. Which she is, but I'd had enough. Was 9 any better in this respect?

5. I think it was more the creepy gross way they were having the conversation, rather than the content.

Yeah, Dean is so thinly characterised and unappealing, I just don't get it. Normally Manning is really good at writing that kind of boy though, the bad-but-lustworthy guy, but in this one I just couldn't understand the attraction. =(

6. I think it is better. she still has her moments of immaturity and obsessiveness, but I still found her likeable. Whereas I think I found 8 a bit repetitive too.

Yay! Book and movie post! :)

The Little Sister comic - but what are your thoughts? And have you read the book? (I can lend this if you like.) I think the images in the comic are lovely, iconically noir (iconable, hahaha) but they really add nothing to the text.

Maltese Falcon - awww, this is my 2nd favourite noir movie! And I love the ending! I think compared to similar movies, especially The Big Sleep with which it's often linked, it holds up so well. (P.S. In case you care, my favourite is The Third Man. OMG! Have I ever squeed to you about The Third Man? SO GOOD.)

I haven't read the book! I found the comic a little confusing actually; I know Chandler's plots are majorly twisty, but I think trying to digest plot and art all at once was too much. Possibly reading the book will clarify this. The art is really cool, and you're right, very noir even in colour, but hm. I thought it was good (oh! I know! I was going to tell you that I missed my train stop because I was engrossed in reading it, heh) but not brilliant.

I saw The Big Sleep at an impressionable age, and I have such a soft spot for Bogart/Bacall that I think it makes it hard for me to judge it on its actual merits (I do remember that TBS plot is even *more* ridiculously convoluted). I haven't seen The Third Man - I must track that down - feel free to squee about at me later. =)

Lololol, you nerd. :P I'll dig up the book. I have it in an anthology, along with The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye. So much Marlowe! I'll try and find The Third Man too (the screenplay of which was written by Graham Greene! <3 <3 <3).

I heart the B/B too and for a long time felt TBS was at least as good as TMF... Howevs each time I rewatch TBS, I have less and less patience for its digressions and inanities. Sigh, sucks to be old.
