It is difficult for me to navigate the commercialization of the holidays (ick), the religious nature of the holidays (every religion is a social construct, dammit), and the family-intensive nature of the holidays (love my family, but not used to spending this much time around them anymore). Our friend group consists of one Vodoun, one Amerindian belief structure, one Elf, two Jews, one (ex)Mormon, one Theist...etc, etc, etc. And yet we'll still sit around a Christmas tree tomorrow morning and open presents and cook a turkey and celebrate our friendship and generosity and goodwill toward one another. Because if our ridiculous theological state is going to mandate a federal holiday on behalf of a single religion, we're happy to co-opt it for our own joyous get-together. And that, to me, is the essence of any winter ceremony: celebrating love and light and joy here at the darkest time of the year.

I am thankful that I can usually offer an escape-valve from your Home With Parents existence. It was (as it is every single time) lovely to see you- and then you and Tom- over the holidays. :)
