feeling better + good news

Apr 15, 2011 10:14

This allergy/sinus/whatever thing is finally started to go away; today's the first day I woke up without pain in my throat, though my head's still a bit stuffy. I've been getting 8-10 hours of sleep a night and not doing a lot of strenuous stuff during the day, so that must be it. Now that I'm finally feeling better, I'm gonna see if I can't run 8 ( Read more... )

I have to leave my dance community, though. :(

Yes, but not necessarily forever. Plus you get to invade a whole new dance community!

The Military Brat in me sees nothing but high adventure in foreign lands. Of course the reality will be different, but still...

It's true, I will get to invade a dance community... I know there's at least some belly dancing there because one of the Estonian scholars I know mentioned that his wife belly dances. For some reason I think it's probably cabaret, so I might get to be the ATS ambassador.

And I love to travel... but I tend to have a tough time adjusting to living in new places. I was not a military brat--my parents still own the house where I grew up.

I absolutely would not bring library books. Do you have a BookEye at your library? If so, take a few days to pdf all the books you can't get your hands on easily, or are too expensive to purchase.

On drastic relocations... they are never as bad, or as dramatic, as we tend to fear they are. In fact, it's mostly a relief to rid oneself of clutter and useless possessions, and to start fresh on light wings in a new exciting location. :)

Hm, I've never heard of BookEye, I'll have to look into it. But yeah, I can make pdfs of the relevant sections of books I have checked out... I just hate having to take the time off writing my diss, ya know?

I am trying to view this as an opportunity to rid myself of clutter, and overall, I'm excited about living in Europe! :)

A BookEye is a machine from heaven! I'm sure there is one *somewhere* in Bloomington. It has revolutionized the graduate experience here (make pdfs of all the book sections you'll ever need! Carry them with you, always!).

I have no doubt you will make Estonia your own, and a little bit of fresh air makes wonders for dissertation completion (not to mention for career building, networking and general good happy health!). :)

Again, HUGE Congratulations!! This is so cool and exciting, I can't wait to hear how it all goes :).

On a completely other note, I can't even express how sad I am that I'm too far away to participate in your clothing swap party :P.

Thank you! :D

You know... if you let me know your size, I might set aside anything that catches my eye and makes me think of you. I could have someone in B'ton store it until AFS...?

Oh wow, that would be fantastic!! You are so sweet, thank you!! Usually I'm a size M in most things, smaller on top than on bottom though. I have dresses and shirts anywhere from sizes 4-8ish and pants and skirts from sizes 6-10ish. I can come up with something to swap too... probably not clothes since that would just be more big things to potentially pack but something good :).

P.S. I submitted a proposal to AFS this year... cross your fingers! :P.

Yeah, I'm probably gonna do the dorm thing at first. However, the "This is Temporary" mantra doesn't work so well for me... I really need a calm, peaceful environment at home so that I can feel safe there. So... we'll see, I guess.

Haha... maybe I'll pass on the courier service, but if you get word of any happening spots or parties in Tallinn, give me a heads-up! It's only a couple hours from Tartu... ;)

Speaking as a former bills & fines supervisor of an IU library (who had to track down dissertating students living abroad more often than I would have liked), I would strongly advise against taking library books with you. If something gets recalled and you need to ship it internationally, there's a much lower chance that it will arrive in time even if you mail it back immediately, and a much higher chance that it might get lost in transit (and then you're nailed with a $100 book replacement fee plus your overdue recall fine.) Any texts that you really absolutely cannot live without for your diss you should purchase, and you should try to scan or copy the chunks you need from the less important ones. And then see what your hosting institution can do for you as far as ILL-- I don't really have a sense of how that works in Europe, but I'd imagine that you can probably get materials from anywhere on the continent and likely the UK too.

Ah, ok. I was hoping someone with your expertise might speak up. I know the host university has ILL, and they can probably get whatever I need... so I will most likely follow your advice and just scan/copy the stuff from library books that I think I'll need while abroad. :)
