angels and band boys

I was going to post about this on Twitter, but there are a few RL people who follow me there that I felt I just couldn't burden with this.  That, and I figured they wouldn't be able to keep up and I didn't want to sound like I was spouting nonsense.

I thought I was through with the whole "mind broken and reformed by fanfic" experience, the whole " ( Read more... )

Have you ever read the essay "Tradition and the Individual Talent" by TS Eliot? Because that ties in with Remix Culture, and while this is the first time I've heard that term, it resonated so hard with me. I talk about intertextuality, the "in jokes" and references of literature in other literature and music, or whatever creative media-- such as using lines from Shakespeare's The Tempest in TS Eliot's The Waste Land. He wrote about that, though, about how taking those things, elements of the art that has gone before, and using them in a new context creates new meaning-- and the old canon shuffles around to make room for the new ( ... )

Nnngh. This is AWESOME, what you say here. I may write neat things, but your contribution expands them immeasurably, you know that, right?

I haven't read the essay. I will. I like Eliot, and it's easier for me to digest essays than poetry. I can't believe that he was talking about the same thing--I mean, I've heard the term intertextualtiy, but I think I've always heard it more in a sociological sense, not in an art/meaning sense. I think the art/meaning sense is what's really being opened up to me right now, and it hits me at such a deeper level than the sociological stuff does.

I whole heartedly agree with you on there being a place for RPS; I've always loved the way you've articulated its worth, and it's helped me feel less ashamed of being part of the genre. And I think you are totally right on about it being a safe place for teenage girls to experiment with sexuality. Hell, it's been a safe place for me to experiment with sexuality. (As an aside, that's one thing I find incredibly valuable about all of fandom: it's ( ... )

I really would like to do any graduate study on this very topic, because I do feel like it's something that is too easily dismissed and overlooked ( ... )

As far as I can tell, remix culture is the topic of the hour, so I bet now would be a great time to do graduate study on this sort of thing. The person at the Quaker conference is doing PhD work in remix culture and faith/spirituality, and flourish is doing fandom and modern media, it seems like, so I think it's hitting every subject area. I'm excited for your future studies ( ... )

Oh my gosh, I have to read angel!Frank on a mission from God likerightnow. I love the overlay of real and not real, when there's just enough specific fact to make a completely fictional set of occurrences gel.

PS I added you on Twitter. I basically spaz about the Jonas Brothers a lot and tweet bad puns. You've been warned.
