Okay, before I even post the synopsis or character bios or picspams, I just need to say that this is single-handedly the most self-indulgent, Mary Sueish thing I have ever done in my LIFE. However, at some point I was like 'FUCK IT I'M DOING IT ANYWAY I DON'T CARE IF IT MAKES NO DAMN SENSE'. And also it's cliched and filled with troupes and whatever, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE POINTS.
Oh, and also this is for
tvrealm so that's why this is even happening.
And so we have this show that's basically lesbians and pretty people. And since I make shitty graphics, here is the plain as hell title card just so I could have something with the name on it;
A middle-aged woman (Elizabeth Mitchell) is confident that her New York life as the head writer of a successful news program is perfect. Until she's shocked when her partner of nine years (Amanda Tapping) cheats on her with a national weather anchor (Christina Hendricks). Without a place to stay, she moves back home with her mother (Meryl Streep) and perpetually under-achieving brother (Ryan Reynolds) in Maysville, Oklahoma. When she lands a new job at the local television station as a copywriter, she reconnects with a high school friend (Gina Torres [Trina]) and realizes old feelings may not have completely faded over time.
Elizabeth Mitchell as Lucy
Desperate to get out of her life in Maysville, Oklahoma, Lucy leaves the small town behind after high school and heads for college at Penn State. Majoring in broadcast journalism with a minor in political science, she moves to New York where she meets her first real love. Lucy searches for job after job, never landing anything long term. Temp work and jobs at local stations start filling up her resume. Finally, after years of grunt work, frustration, and sacrificing, she lands a job at a major television network and eventually makes her way from writer of fluff pieces to hard hitting topics that air on the nightly news. After nine years with her girlfriend, Lucy comes home from a location piece to find the national weather girl in her bed. Unable to take the humiliation, Lucy leaves her life in New York behind to go home, moving in with her mother and brother. She finds a job at a local news station as a copywriter. It's not all bad though - she runs into an old friend from high school, realizing that feelings she thought had been a silly crush might actually have merit.
Amanda Tapping as Monica
Monica meets Lucy at Penn State while she's majoring in Communications. They shared a small table at the student union and began dating soon after. Monica's more outgoing than Lucy from the beginning, always going to parties, hosting parties, but she's also smart enough to match wits with her girlfriend. On the nights she's not going out, Monica and Lucy have more in common than not, from political views to television shows. Monica, though, never has stayed in one place long, and when she's coming up on ten years in the same spot, she starts to wander. While Lucy is in another state doing research on a report, there's a party in the building where they both work. Monica drinks a little too much, looks a little too long at another woman, and begins an affair. When Lucy comes home and catches them in the act, it's over. Monica offers to move out, but Lucy leaves first.
Christina Hendricks as Livia
The hardest work Livia has ever done, was bargaining for grades to get her degree in meteorology. She knows enough, but on the national weather broadcasts, all she has to do is read the cue cards and point to a green screen. She's beautiful and she knows it, and she also knows that Monica's in a relationship when the other woman gets drunk and makes a pass. Livia's life though, isn't all air headed nonsense. When she was 17, she was the only witness to a murder that she claims she can't remember at all. She's tried to escape the scrutiny, but after sleeping with Monica and driving Lucy away, Livia's past comes back to haunt her. Monica needs a story, hoping to impress Lucy and win her back, and Livia's intriguing past might be exactly the break she needs.
Meryl Streep as Myrna
Myrna is a down home, Southern at heart mother of two who has no idea that her oldest child is gay. She's unaware and Lucy hasn't yet found a way to tell her. She's proud of her daughter though, frequently talking to her on the phone and asking for more visits home. Her son is less of an educational adventurist, but she welcomes him back into her home. She welcomes her daughter too, as puzzled and confused as she is to see her leaving a career behind that she worked so hard for. With her children home, Myrna has to admit (but never would out loud) that she's glad to no longer be alone in a big house after her husband decides to start life over again with his new family - including an infant son. She's also relieved (and would never say out loud) that her children are firmly on her side in the divorce.
Ryan Reynolds as Colin
Eight years younger than his sister Lucy, Colin has grown up trying to live up to his sister and falling short. He tried to be exactly like her as a kid, and when she moved away for school he never really got over losing his best friend. As an adult, he harbored a bit of resentment until she trusted him with the secret that she's gay. He's been begging her for years to come home, but knows that Maysville isn't where her dreams are. He's generally not as smart as his sister - barely graduated high school and didn't go to college, but he did try to strike out on his own. When his dad leaves, Colin moves back in with his mother and while he can seem like a bit of a free-loader, has been a shoulder for his mom to lean on, and a supportive ear for his sister.
Gina Torres as Trina
A woman feeling like she's destined to stay in a small town forever, Trina is an intense and focused local news reporter. She never got out of the state, having gone to a college 'in the city' to study broadcast journalism. She's won local awards for her reporting but has always dreamed about doing something bigger and better. In high school she gravitated toward Lucy, but never thought that she'd stand a chance. She admired the fact that Lucy had a plan. That being on the yearbook staff and taking a journalism class wasn't just to pass time. But it also meant that Lucy left and followed her dream, while Trina stayed behind. When Lucy suddenly comes home though, and starts working at the same news station, opportunities to explore their relationship present themselves again, and this time Trina plans to follow through.
SUPPORTING CAST
Ted Danson as Marshall
The ex-husband of Myrna, Ted leaves her after twenty-seven years of marriage. They're on good terms depending on the day. Some days he's welcome, and some days he definitely knows that Myrna would rather him jump off a cliff. And he's well aware that his children would rather not speak to him.
Rose Byrne as Holly
Thirty years younger than her new husband, Holly marries Marshall after meeting him at a business retreat in Denver, Colorado. They fall in love and Marshall ends his marriage to be with her. They're married shortly after and have a two month old son named Will.
Joel McHale as Max
Trina's partner at the news desk, Max is equal parts smarmy and charming. His chemistry with Trina on screen is played up, leading many people (including Lucy) to believe there's more happening off screen.
Idris Elba as Reese
Reese is both Trina and Lucy's boss at the news station in Maysville. A tough but fair station manager, he knows he'll never move ahead in ratings to compete with big cities, but nevertheless, his nightly news is his baby. He expects the best from his writers, anchors, and producers. In his downtime, he's Lucy's confidant, mentoring her to eventually take over his position.
Gillian Anderson as Unknown Stranger
She has a secret about Livia's past that she's not telling just yet. It's enough though, to make her follow Lucy back to Oklahoma and leave her clues that will force her to reconnect with Monica to unravel the mystery.
