We said hello to Master Seargent Wise, and he was familiar with Semper Fi Fund which Fandom Rocks is supporting this time around. He was very kind to chat with us quickly. I was amazed that they gave them those coins - he said there are two ways to get one: become a Green Beret or a Green Beret gives you one, and they are very rarely given to a civilian. Amazing.

He also said that the studio (?) is sending 3,000 copies of the S2 DVDs overseas! I may have misheard if it was only S2 or both seasons, but that is amazing.

It was a fantastic thing to happen on Veteran's Day.

I heard about the 3,000 copies -- how awesome! Hey, did you happen to get contact infor for the Master Sargent? I'd really love to be able to get in touch with him and maybe find out additional places we could send the DVD sets.

I did not unfortunately. You *might* be able to email Gary and Adam about that. He said he met them two years ago and has been friends since. If you explain it's for OpWinchester and ask for the info to be forwarded on, maybe?

I have a concern with the timing of this- I've seen a lot of people on my flist and elsewhere on lj expressing concern about purchasing DVDs at this time (due to the WGA strike.)

I was just wondering what your (the organizers) thoughts are on that, since I wonder if some people who would otherwise contribute will hold off, and the projec won't be as successful as one might hope.

Sorry for jumping in uninvited, but it is my understanding that the WGA is not advising boycotting DVD purchases. At the time of the beginning of the strike they had already pulled their proposal for increased DVD residuals off the table. The main concern currently has to do with payment for "new media" i.e. internet uses of writers' work for which they are not currently being paid at all. In truth, since they aren't currently working, the writers could probably use the residual checks.

By all means, jump in! :) I brought the issue up precisely because I wasn't sure myself about the situation and like I said I HAVE seen people talking about boycotting DVDs- so I thought it'd be good to address it in some way in connection with the post. (I know how generous the SPN fandom can be, and I'd hate to see the project do worse than it should simply because of uncertainty about buying DVDs.)

Yeah, I've seen a lot of people wondering as well. Unfortunately I've trawled through a WAY TOO MUCH strike info in the last few days. I couldn't find a specific link to that info, but I'm fairly certain that the WGA is advising boycotting reruns, replacement programming, and streaming internet video since those things are clearly counter-productive to strike activities. However, writers are still being paid residuals for DVD purchases and purchased downloads of TV episodes and movies, even if it's not as much as they would like.

Umm, okay, maybe I'm challenged, but the link to donate just takes me to my own Paypal account page. Help?

Funny coincidence! In a post on my personal LJ, I just posted that since the holidays were coming and because of the whole Con and coins thing, people should consider Op:Win to give our soldiers a little taste of home since they werne't likely to BE home.

GMTA!

No problem. I also own the Supernatural Fans group at Cafemom, so I posted it there too.
