I hardly think we can say kudos to Chuck Schumer, anymore than we can say kudos to Machiavelli. Schumer needed to support Casey so that the democrats could win a majority in the senate, and so his support was not born out of tolerance but out of a desire for victory.
But he did have the gonads to say he was okay with Casey's beliefs. If he wasn't interested in diversifying the party at all, he wouldn't have mentioned it.
In a time when securing a majority was the most important thing, the appearance of tolerance of a diversity of beliefs is far more important than actual tolerance. He can say it all he wants, it remains nothing but empty lip service used for political gain. There is nothing admirable about it, in my mind; in fact, I find it all the more deplorable.
