[The video flickers on, unfocused static breaking the transmission, occasionally focusing in on a shirtless man with a cold expression on his face. He wastes no time in getting to the brink of things. His voice is harsh, the eloquent British tones offset by a bitter note ( Read more... )

It has to be another world, if anything. It can't just-

Our memories are our own. No one has any right to tell us otherwise.

Another world...?

[A pause.]

Is it possible? I would have assumed virtual reality, but transdimensional crossing?

It's not impossible, believe me.

[Her hair is blue. Do you really think world-traveling isn't possible?]

[They have hair dyes in 2005 too, you know.]

...tch. It sounds like something Dr Emmerich would be involved in.

[Perhaps the Patriots were behind this too.]

Eaten...?

Yes... [Ah, right. Robot.]

Humans eat these things. Among other things. They put them in their mouths and chew them up before swallowing them.

It's how we produce energy to survive. It comes from the food.

You actually took that cookie with you? I wasn't about to touch it.

One of the first things you learn in the SAS is that anything can be useful for survival. I don't plan to eat it - frankly, I'd sooner eat rats than trust food from an unknown source.

At least you realize it'd be stupid to eat it.

...SAS?

Special Air service. It's a high-level military force in Britain. We're the best.

[Pride in his voice? Oh yes.]

Interesting first communication

[Heatwave smiles tiredly, attempting to convey that he wasn't trying to be insulting.]

[But he was tired of thinking about that familiar topic, so he moved on quickly]

Have you?

To hell with subtlety. I want to know what's going on.

[A derisive snort.]

No. I'm hardly going to eat a biscuit given under such disturbing circumstances. Frankly, I'm reluctant to eat anything at the moment. For all we know there might be hallucinogens in the food - or cocaine and gunpowder. I'm not sure which is worse.

Hopefully you get answers. I haven't been able to find anything.

[Heatwave nods, then frowns as Liquid lists something he'd never heard of before] Cocaine?

It's a type of illegal drug. Highly addictive, and when combined with gunpowder in the food, over a period of time it can induce a docile and obedient attitude in the person that consumes it. They used to use it for child soldiers, I gather.

I have to believe that the people running this place are lying in order to control us. I have people waiting for me back home.

*he looks away, presumably at his cookie* No, I'm not sure I want to.

I agree. But it may be more complicated. With such firm beliefs, it's possible this entire place could be a VR simulation - or worse.

...tch. I don't blame you.

Naturally. If it wasn't complicated it wouldn't work. *a pause* VR simulation?

Who knows whether or not this thing is as polluted as they say the country has become.

Virtual reality. A hallucination created by technology. Your body sleeps, while your mind relives a different life.

Tch. If that's the case, I wouldn't trust any of the food here, either.
