Had a friend in college who had a catalog of dirty ditties she shared liberally. There's one that was not just filthy, but (I realized) horribly anti-Semitic. Why that one? I hated that song from the first time she sang it in the women's room near the west entrance. Help! I even remember the first time I heard it!

Isn't it funny how its the obscene and awful that gets stuck in our heads? There are a bunch of horrid little ditties I learned in elementary school that I think of now and cringe. I learned them from the other children. Its like we passed around every awful song secretly behind our parents' backs. God, they're all still in my head!

1) The variety of music - the hip/hop connection is there and present, but there's also a ton of just plain old melodic songs - Burr sings "Wait For It" (which is more of a pop tune) and the show stopping "The Room Where It Happens" (which has a little rap, but is really a rollicking traditional musical hall number) for example. Eliza Hamilton also mostly sings melodic numbers ("Burn" and "Helpless"). I think Manuel-Miranda does a great job of matching music to the dramatic moment. Sometimes, that means heavy rap. Sometimes, that means hearftbreakingly sparse melodies2) The overall push of the story is really powerful - its less a musical about Alexander Hamilton and more a musical about the story of Hamilton - and who gets to tell that story.
