OK, so what do you think I should see? In-theaters, rentable, thepiratebaydotcommable, whichever. Released last weekend or 90 years ago

Hmm... the best movies I've seen lately haven't been in the theatres. Of course it depends on what you're looking for, but I would have to say my favorite semi-recent release would by 'The History Boys' and 'Howl's Moving Castle'.
My usual random recommendation is Until the End of the World (Wim Wenders, 1991). Unfortunately it's not easy to find. I have a crappy VHS dub from cable.
I saw The Baxter on cable last week. Rather more sedate than "Stella" (same guys are in it) but still pretty amusing.
Oh, literally the big screen! I really don't know. I assume it's on a wee one if only coz I have never seen anything other than special woo-woo screenings and shows on the biggun, and the Simpsons movie is day-old bread now.
The Simpsons movie is probably a good bet, as it should be quite entertaining even if it is a mild disappointment.
I really enjoyed Live Free or Die Hard when I saw it earlier this year. It's a fun summer actioner and it actually holds its own as a movie (and not just an action-fest) much more than I expected (certainly better than the other two Die Hard sequels did).
The next two movies I'm likely to see in some order are Stardust and The Bourne Ultimatum. I've heard nothing but good things about Bourne, and the producers have a good track record with the first two both action-wise and movie-wise.
And since I seem to have something of a theme to this post already... if you haven't seen Casino Royale (the Daniel Craig version), you should, as it too has excellent action sequences (the first extended action set piece is outstanding), and in my opinion is stronger movie-wise than any Brosnan or Dalton Bond movie. (Alas, I don't have enough knowledge of Connery Bond films to compare adequately.)
wish i'd seen this post the other day. the HFA was showing the unbelievable truth last night and after hours tonight, both of which were very good. after hours is disturbing and hilarious, the unbelievable truth insightful, witty, and beautiful (in that late 1980s way) to watch. (it's also directed by the henry fool/fay grim guy, should that float your boat.) both of these are available on DVD, as are my other usual recs: i know where i'm going!, good-bye lenin!, il conformista, and boudu saved from drowning.

I saw the most recent Harry Potter movie recently -- it was OK, a bit like watching the Cliff's notes version of the book.
