The only purpose any car alarm has ever served is to annoy me, personally, when it goes off at some wildly inappropriate time by complete accident, including a car parked across the street from my place at 6 am on a winter morning during exams once many years ago. The owner didn't appear after fifteen minutes or twenty minutes so I broke into the car, popped the hood and disconnected the battery.
And no car alarm has ever prevented anyone from stealing a car, ever. The only good thing that can be said about them is that the sound of thousands of car alarms going off at the same time after an earthquake is decidedly eerie.
