The first Strictly results show

After getting excited by some of the initial legwork, the big Western pro opening number didn’t do much for me. I don’t know the song or the singer, and having him ‘in the saloon’ just detracted from the dancing, so bleh. Although with Amy absent, I’d like more info about their contingency plans for when pros have to self-isolate.

Clotheswatch: TessnClaud went for trouser suits, (white and black respectively) and Tess’s silhouette was better, although I liked Claudia’s top fine when she was in close-up. Shirley went for colour (in a half-tablecloth green dress) and Motsi went for metallic. Craig and Anton may have worn the exact same suit.

Fair recap, quick flash of the combined leaderboard and the first reveals. Nina was fair because she’d been at the bottom, but once Ugo and Adam were declared safe, there was little jeopardy. They started trailing movie week and I laughed out loud at Aljiaz revealing to Sara that they’d be doing the samba next week, more for the way he said it than anything. (Is Dianne only willing to stop wearing red if there’s a Muppet connection?) Shirley offered insightful critique of Adam.

I spent a lot of time boggling at how Griff had got up into that position in that dress. I mean, she obviously wasn’t on stilts or a giant bog roll. I hope ITT shows us how. I liked the looseness of the dress at the top and how it moved. Couldn’t figure out what the base elements of the pros’ dance was, and ended up guessing ‘show dance’. Song was a bit bleh, but I’m ensconced in middle age now, so who cares?

Rhys, Greg and Robert (and partners) were tortured meanly, and Katie was in the dance off, which I’d called, thank you very much. Obviously, Nina could clean up her mistakes (and hope Katie did some if she were that way inclined.) Nina was noticeably so much better this time around, but Katie improved too. I thought from Shirley’s face that she knew it would be sent up to her (by Anton). Goodbye then, Nina and Neil, I would have liked to see a few more Latins from you, and then we had the awkwardest bit of the how thanks to the pandemic, because the rest of the couples have to stay off the dancefloor so there’s no respite from the awkward last dance between two gutted people.

I cringed again when they repeated it on ITT tonight, about which the only thing I’d say is that I prefer Jo(anne) on Choreography Corner over Kevin.
