First recs post of the year (1/?)
Fanfiction recs in the following fandoms: The Amelia Peabody mysteries, Bodyguard (TV), Dredd, The Graceling Realm series, The Martian and Pacific Rim.
The Amelia Peabody mysteries
Joy has he whom she embraces: musesfool (Peabody/Emerson, Evelyn/Walter, teen, ‘Crocodile on the Sandbank’ coda.)
Evelyn and I agreed that every woman should feel a queen on her wedding night. The best guarantee of such a sensation, of course, is to choose men who
would make us feel that way, but a little mise en scène never hurt.
Pitch-perfect Amelia voice, and this is a gap in canon that needed to be filled. I smiled throughout.
Bodyguard (TV)
This Year, That’s Enough: ChokolatteJedi (David/Vicky, David & family)
Summary: Vicky and the kids have a holiday tradition, and David joins in for the first time.
The kind of fic I craved after the show ended. The domesticity is set off strongly by the references to past Christmases, and where David and Vicky are at seems utterly plausible.
Dredd
You Should Have Read My Mind: Silky_Octopus (teen, long, pre Dredd/Anderson)
I loved how this fic showed that Anderson's experience had developed her competence and confidence. The way her psychic abilities were written and the delicious UST made this a fic to savour. (Minor SPAG issues.)
The Graceling Realm series (formerly the Seven Kindoms trilogy)
Braiding, Weaving, Reflecting: starfishstar (Gen, Bitterblue, Katsa, post ‘Bitterblue’)
Lovely snapshot of their sisterly relationship.
The Martian
Legacy: florahart (Beck/Johanssen, teen, long)
So much that was interesting going on here and fun like the numbered lists about NASA versus the reality of this mission. I particularly loved how smart they all were yet relatably vulnerable for all that, and especially how Beck loved Johanssen's intelligence.
Pacific Rim
Together We Are Not Optional: tielan (Mako/Raleigh, two-parter, I’d say it was a teen)
Does a beautiful job of looking at what’s going on inside (grief, yearning, hope) inside them and between them (so much Drift connection, yay) as they go on a very public tour.
Her smile is all the mornings and all the evenings for the rest of their life.
