The Fall "It's my story/Mine too"

I watched The Fall last night. I'd had a second hand copy for months, but had hesitated to watch it. Well, it was wonderful. Ambitious, crazy, eye-popping, but anchored by a wonderfully naturalistic child performance. Five-year old Alexandria is stuck in hospital with an awkward cast, waiting for her broken arm to heal. She meets a heartbroken stuntman named Roy who starts telling her a story - which we get to see play out. It features bandits, love, a quest for revenge and quite wonderful things. It is almost the kind of story that you'd tell a receptive child who's second language is English, with a dreamlike succession of spectacular locations as a backdrop for amazing events. Except Roy is telling Alexandria the story to get her to help him end his life. BUT as Alexandria gets to know more about death and takes ownership of the story, she totally self-inserts and acts like a crazy fan/shipper insists on there being hope and makes Roy change the ending.

"It's my story.

"Mine too."

It most reminded me of Zhang Yimou's work in terms of scope and colour, except it has a sense of humour (though there are heartbreaking bits). But it's it's own fantastic creature, with a touch of the heightened melodrama that I associated with the silent movies of the era in which it's set. Also it features Lee Pace! I can't imagine what director Tarsem will come up with next...Oh, imdb says Greek mythology.
