Picarat 007 [VIDEO/ACTION IN VIOLET CITY]

Nov 12, 2010 00:07

[So, the festival is now over and everything around the cities is being cleaned up. The booths has been placed away and the confetti on the ground being swept away. It looks just like what most finished festivals looked like. It even has that usual feeling of nostalgia when you just look around, just thinking about that amazing event. Of course, ( Read more... )

It's the Maid. If the man was murdered on a Sunday morning, there's no way there would be any mail to get, since it doesn't run on Sunday.

That is quite correct! Quite the mistake on the maid's behalf as it seems as if she was too rash into her decision making.

[The Professor pulls out his notebook from his sling bag and opens it up, jotting down the won 30 picarats next to Ramona's name.]

Wonderfully done, Miss Ramona. It seems as if you tore apart that one quite quickly.

It was a little confusing at first, until I saw the day. I guess it'd trick people who don't take the day as any importance and they might instead guess the Butler or the Wife.

Yes, without knowing the significance of the Sunday and without knowledge of mail not being delivered on that day, it would be rather difficult to solve.

Would you like to solve another puzzle of mine, or would you like to go ahead and exchange your picarats for prizes? You are still in Violet City, correct?

Haha, yes. May I ask what Sunday and the mail have to do with each other though? [He'll need more details before he could say anything though, but that smile on his face seems to say that you are very close!]

Are we talking about western mail?

[He nods.]

Yes, we are. I apologize if you are not very knowledgeable about the western mailing system.

[Stuck on Route 30 keeping an eye out on Phoenix and his "girlfriend", Edgeworth is... well, he wants a distraction from all this drama, so he was browsing his gear when -- oh, there was a festival going on and he wasn't aware. Huh.

At the professor's riddle, he just smiles, remembering those old detective riddles his father used to tell.]

The maid was the murderer. Unless the murder happened in a world where they don't have the "no mail on Sundays" doctrine, there should be no mail for her to collect.

You are quite correct, my boy! The key to solving this puzzle is that there should be no mail to retrieve on a Sunday. Of course, if you did not know that, it would be awfully hard to solve it. Very well done, Miles.

[And he jots down 30 picarats next to Miles' name in his notepad in neat handwriting.]

You are quite clever for a boy your age. I am very impressed that you solved it very quickly.

T-thank you, sir. [Here Layton, have a sheepish grin!]

My father and I used to play games like this often. I also liked to read mysteries..
I wonder if they have libraries here in Johto.

Is that so? Well, it is always good to play games such as these. Your father must be a very intelligent man.

I have no seen a library here in Johto so far, but there is a school in Violet City. I am teaching there at the moment, and they do have a few books that you may read there.

Assuming the mail delivery schedule in this scenario is the same as where I'm from, it would have to be the maid: there's no mail delivery on Sundays.

If that's not it, I'd have to know more specific details.

[video] profpuzzle November 12 2010, 05:40:37 UTC
No more specific details are need, Mr. Justice, for it seems as you have solved this puzzle! Once the officers had heard that the maid went to retrieve the mail on a Sunday morning, it was quite the end for her. Critical thinking is the key to success.

[He writes down the won amount of picarats next to Apollo's name in his notebook where he writes down all his puzzles, clues in this world, and the picarats given to each person.]

As expected from a defense attorney, Mr. Justice. That took you no time to solve it, did you?

[Nods] I'm used to finding contradictions, so it wasn't too hard. I over-thought it a little at first.

What exactly are picarats? Is it some kind of points system?

Reply

[video] profpuzzle November 12 2010, 20:23:51 UTC
Haha, yes. Picarats are indeed a type of point system. They also determine how difficult a puzzle is; the easiest being 10 and the hardest 99. When you solve the puzzle, you earn the amount of picarats that was assigned to that puzzle. However, if you get the answer incorrectly, the amount drops little by little. If it drops too much, I will stop it at a certain number. This is just my little way of distributing points to those who are kind enough to solve my puzzles. You may then exchange these picarats for prizes, such as now.

Would you like to do that, Mr. Justice, or would you like to save and keep solving?

[France stares at the screen for a long time, chewing his bottom lip and mumbling about -]

The maid. It has to be the maid. She was having an affair with the master of the house and wanted him to leave his wife, but he wouldn't, so she murdered him in revenge for taking her virginity.

[FFFFFFFFFFF C-CAN LAYTON HAVE ANOTHER INVISIBLE SPIT TAKE WITH HIS INVISIBLE TEA? Cause he totally choking on something right now, like air. He's...really not good with these sexual kind of topics.]

W-Well, sir. You have the murderer correct, but the motive is quite different. No affair was made with anyone in the household. The officers heard no other information but their alibis when they made the arrest.

[Picarats are now down to 27.]

[France pouts. Aw, now he won't have an even number of picarats...]

Oh... Well, if it's still the maid...

[He reaches up, playing idly with his hair.]

I guess it's the mail then. Most Christian countries don't get mail on Sundays. I think my answer is better though...

[Well, at least if he solves more puzzles down the line, it might become even again!]

Yes, and you are quite correct this time, Mr. France! Mail is normally not mailed on Sundays, and the officers caught onto that detail instantly. Wonderful job.

[And he quickly scribbles down the won picarats next to France's name.]

A-Ah, well, I apologize if you think so. I am afraid none of the puzzles I have at the moment involve anything about affairs or anything involving any...sexual matters...
