oo1: Professor Layton and the Calamitous City

Claire, wait! [The video feed opens to the view of green sneakers (Layton having accidentally kicked the device laying on the ground and causing it to start), and the sound of a clipped, British accent. However, to those that know Layton, those two words, breaking in tone, sound very unlike the composed professor. The shoes shuffle ( Read more... )

Clive, is that you? Indeed, I am. Well, I am in Dissimulo to be precise.

It is me... The rest of us are located in Discedo, so you know. I'm not sure how to handle this... have you already spoken with Luke and Flora? They're both here.

Yes, I've spoken to them, at least about where we are at currently and a little bit of the situation. That and, ah, yours and Flora's disagreement, I suppose I shall say, earlier. I'm glad you two get along again.

I'm sure you will have more to tell me when I get to Discedo.

Ah--Yes, Flora lives with me now, as you probably already know. She's quite content here. ((WOW how much of their disagreement do you KNOW about?! He'll not to press the subject himself, because really, this is not something he wants to be interrogated on in the first place.)) No matter; Luke, in truth, likely knows more of Discedo's habits than I do, he's been here much longer than I have. I can say Fortuna is no average place. Illusions, nefarious creatures, you name it, no doubt your worst nightmare is present in some form.

I see. I'm happy to hear that she is adjusting well. [Luke told him most of what has been going on, and Layton has a few ideas on what might not have been explained to him. But he knows this isn't the time or place for personal questions.]

[Layton gives a wry smile.] Well, this is indeed an unfortunate place to wind up for holiday. But, in all seriousness, I only thought the creatures and derelict conditions would pose a problem to us. Illusions? Do the scientists have other means of terrorizing the people here?

Of course, otherwise things would be a walk in the park around here. One of the less appealing happened directly upon my arrival you see. A series of "shadows", if you will, had been following the population of Discedo. About the time I arrived, these "shadows" took over those who they followed. Luke was among the few who were possessed.

I would... recommend not mentioning this to Luke, however. He was quite a mess when I picked him up at the hospital. He claimed he had been killed... and quite brutally at that.

[A very long pause follows before Layton replies.] Good heavens. I see what you mean, Clive.

No, I will not tell Luke of what you said. It wouldn't do to put him through those trials again.

[A little more steelier:] To think these scientists do such things. It's truly mad.

It's not just that, professor. We've also been ridiculed by illusions here. They started out as simple marbles in our apartment, but eventually it escalated to corpses and ghosts.

..I wouldn't bring that one up to Flora, either. It hasn't been easy for any of us. Whatever else might be in store will be equally terrible, if not worse. You best keep on your toes.

Then, it just makes it all the more important to get to the bottom of the mysteries presented to us. If only to prevent the escalation of these illusions. [But with what everyone has said so far, the situation seemed quite dire to Layton.]

No, of course of not. I'm sorry you all had to go through such harrowing events. [Layton nods.] I intend to. I wouldn't want to be caught off guard in this place at all.

Is there anything else you need to know?

[a thoughtful hum.] Not at this moment. Perhaps I might ask you more questions when we can talk in person.

...Well, actually, I do have one about this contraption. [He gives the communicator a shake.] What is it called? It seems like an interesting bit of machinery.

The communicator! At least that's the name everyone uses for it. It's really quite the device. There's a text function, a video function, as well as the audio we're using now.

And a few little tid-bit extras; I've been meaning to ask if anyone knew anything about programming, for I believe it can be tampered with to add more of these extras. ((ODDLY EXCITED?! YOU BETCHA!!!))

How utterly fascinating. It's certainly above the type of communication devices back in London.

That sounds like a capital idea. I imagine it ould be very useful to discover just how far these little contraptions can be pushed. [a small chuckle. Clive Dove---the first boy to build a mecha solely out of communicators. :|b] I tinker around with machines myself, but I am certainly no engineer. I think I spoke to a boy who works as a mechanic here not too long ago, if that is any help.

I'm not sure it's a mechanic that would know how to work this--technology, maybe. If I do learn anything, I can share my finds with you!

That would be great. Thank you, Clive.

I'd certainly love to get to the bottom of this mysterious communicator.
