Floor: 5
Money: $24,550
Kills: 23
Time: 7:04
Rescues: 1

Welcome to floors 5-8, known with more hostility as the Jungle Zone! This is probably one of the most deadly parts of the game, contianing both a multitude of things that can kill me instantly and a multitde of enemies with a great track record of hurting me once.

There is a lot of new stuff on this screen, but I will only explain some of it! The red and green monster to the left of me is a Maneater. It is a plantmonster with a penchant for eating people! It moves very slowly, but any humanoid coming into contact with it will get killed instantly. After eating someone, it sleeps for a while.

Left of that is a 2-block-tall strange totem. This is a Spear Trap! If anything comes close to it on either side, there will be a short warning delay, after which spears will come shosoting out at a range of about half a block. These spears hit for a whopping four points of damage, which is usually instakill, so they are to be avoided!

Left of that, trapped in a web, is a caveman. They are simple enemies, also appearing in Zone 1, which walk around aimlessly, breaking into a high-speed charge if they see you. They, along with the Maneaters, have more than one health, and thus can be knocked unconscious. Any attack that doesn't kill them will knock them out for a few seconds, during which time they can be picked up and thrown around. Just be careful not to be holding them when they wake up...

...but that's enough of that for now. Onwards!

A specialty shop!

There are various items here, but only one catches my fancy. Only one.

Oh yes.
I have a cape.

The power of the cape is that, by pressing the jump button while in midair, I can glide, falling very slowly and at a controlled pace. While gliding, I can still hurt enemies by landing on them, and I don't take any damage from falling. A wonderful item.

Yes, those things are trees. They have the special property that you can hold onto the sides of them at any point, and climb them accordingly. Useful!

That enemy down there is a fire frog. How is that different from a regular frog? Let's kill it and find out!

After a few seconds of post-death flailing, fire frogs explode violently, just like bombs. This can be used to your advantage, but you have to be REALLY careful, as you only have a couple seconds to pick them up and throw them before they explode.

Water! Fortunately, this game has no drowning mechanics, so water is safe. In theory. You can't hurt things by jumping on them in water, and you move more slowly, and there are nasty things in it.

On the far left, you can see the deadly pihrana. There's only one, so this isn't too dangerous of a pool, but they can be hard to handle if there are enough of them. There are also two frogs.

More on frogs later.

Stupid caveman got the jump on me, and I lost a health to it. Oh well, getting kind of injured here.

To my right is another common hazard of the jungle: spikepits. Vines operate about halfway between ropes and ladders, making them our only possible safe route across. Jump, Tarzan, jump!

Success! On to floor 6.

I would like to take a moment to talk about frogs.

I hate frogs.

Frogs are my least favorite enemy to face in this game. I tend to get hit by them with hilarious frequency. Their jumping patterns are just random enough that they always seem to come from the one angle I can't handle.

I hate frogs.

This is an altar! For anyone in the audience who's played ADOM (yes, all two of you), you will know these well, as they are basically exactly the same.

Any monster with at least two health can be sacrificed at an altar. If an enemy is knocked out, then dropped on an altar before it wakes up, it will be sacrificed to Kali, who may grant you boons for your trouble. Also, damaging an altar will invoke Kali's wrath. More on these later.

This floor was basically nothing but frogs.

To reiterate my past words:

I hate frogs.

Two things happening here. First, look closely at my item list in the corner: The Udjat Eye is closed! This is its true ability: Somewhere on floors 5-7, there is always a secret entrance to the Black Market. When on the floor, the Udjat Eye will start slowly blinking. The closer you get to the hidden door, the faster it blinks.

Also, there is an altar here, right next to some convenient sacrifical fodder!

Unfortunately, he was charging my way and I'm holding a pistol so I accidentally killed him. Oh well, corpses can still be sacrificed at half effectiveness.

Time to search for the Black Market!

I HATE FROGS

And so our first adventure ends, on floor 7. Let's hope my next run does better!
