>> Chapter 3: Village Dungeon II
Second floor of the Village Dungeon!
A moment to discuss stat training!
Ways to instantly increase an attribute are extremely rare. Instead, doing things related to a skill (reading for Learning, carrying a lot of heavy items for strength, etc.) will slowly train them over time. When an attribute has been worked out enough, it will enter the "trained" status - then, periodically over time or when gaining levels, the game will increase all trained attributes by one.
My learning just went up! It doesn't have much room to grow, though - attributes can only be trained towards character-depending inherent maximum values. My maximum Learning is 23.
There are ways to increase stats beyond their maximums, though...
Iron rations! The standard foot item for sale in Terinyo is large rations. Iron rations are more nutritious and weigh less - the 100s is the weight in stones. Large rations weigh 200s.
The goblin left behind a wand!
Let's find it what it does through the old standby of all roguelike characters: TRY IT AND SEE
ZZAAAMMMM!
Turns out this is a Wand of Magic Missile, and it's tough to get screenshots of bolt spells.
The point is, magic missile shoots out in a straight line in any direction, hitting everything in its path for about five spaces for some non-elemental damage. As a fun bonus, it can bounce off of walls to hit enemies around corners or at awkward angles! 3 charges left.
Keys can be lifesavers, because they bypass door traps! If I encounter a door with a triangular lock, I am set.
This time, I can't identify it! And since I failed to detect its item status, I don't want to put it on and try it out, as it might be cursed.
All the ['s on this floor are armor items inferior to the ones I already have - Ugly Clothes, Light Furs and a Medium Shield.
j
Jackal
Threat Level: 1/10
Special: N/A
Corpse: Edible, no effect
And we're done with this floor, so onward!
Sometimes when doors break, they leave sticks behind. These can be useful for archers, who can craft them into arrows with a fletchery kit.
Also, this is so obviously a hidden door to the North.
r
Ratling Thief
Threat Level: 1/10
Special: Steals gold
Corpse: Inedible
The gold stealing is decidedly pointless when I can just kill him and take the gold back.
Also, level up!
Thanks to my increased Learning, I got SIX skill increases this level!
Next level at 1413 experience.
@
Cutpurse
Threat Level: 1/10
Special: Steals gold
Corpse: Edible, no effect
I swear, this is the floor if pathetic gold-stealing monsters. And yes, you can eat people. Weird?
Large kobolds are almost exactly like kobolds.
And that message "You sense a certain tension" is a warning that there's a real notable encounter somewhere on this floor...
TENSION ROOM
Tension rooms are rooms full of monsters, usually of a single kind. When you open the door, the walls around it collapse, so that several of them can attack you at once.
i
Fire Beetle
Threat Level: 2/10
Special: Fire resistance, high PV
Corpse: Chance to gain fire resistance
The strategy is to back out into the hallway where they have to fight you one at a time, then hack away! These fire beetles are tougher than goblins, but still unlikely to penetrate my armor.
These rooms are also useful, because LEVEL UP!
Literacy maxed! Detect Item Status getting there, too.
Next level at 2542 experience.
There are also downsides to these rooms! When you kill the same monster type repeatedly, there are effects. As the number of monsters you've killed of a certain type increases, future incarnations of that enemy spawn at a higher level, and the exp rewards you get for killing them go down. One tension room won't produce any major effects, but it's something to be aware of.
B
Giant Bat
Threat Level: 1/10
Special: Flies
Corpse: Edible, no effect
Barely distinguishable from large bats.
LEVEL UP AGAIN
Level six is an important one! First of all, it means that the main quest offered by the sheriff of Terinyo is no longer available, because the Raider Lord Kranach flees the Drakalor Chain. Second, it means that I get my first class ability: Turn Undead. Third, it means I get another talent - this level, I pick Miser, which increases the amount of gold I have. Alert was a prerequisite for this.
Next level at 4448 experience.
Tension room cleared! Let's check out my loot pile.
An unidentified scroll and a bottle of water!
The latter is very important, for reasons which will become apparent in mid-game. The former, I'll try out right now!
Scroll of darkness! These are more useful than you might think.
z
Zombie
Threat Level: 1/10
Special: Undead
Corpse: Poisons, possible sickness
I can't turn it, unfortunately, because I'm not in good enough standing with my deity.
g
Gnoll
Threat Level: 2/10
Special: Throws battle axes
Corpse: Edible, no effect
Their axes do more damage than the crude weapons wielded by kobolds and goblins, but they're still just cannon fodder.
Floor 3 mapped out! Time to advance.
w
White Worm
Threat Level: 3/10
Special: Poisons (very rare), breeder
Corpse: Edible, no effect
@
Threat Level: 0/10
Special: Heals, teaches Healing skill
Corpse: >:(
A single worm is no problem (aside from how it got a critical hit and hit me for 9 damage), but they must be dealt with IMMEDIATELY, as they produce more copies of themselves indefinitely. Let them spread, and they'll soon be unmanageable.
Jharod the Healer is an important NPC who will, under certain circumstances, teach the Healing skill to PCs who don't have it. Vital, as it is the most important skill in the game.
Beyond that, he offers a full heal when talked to, up to 7 times. Also, he's important for another event later in this dungeon, so I'm making this room's location with a gold piece.
Another unID's scroll! Let's see what it does.
The danger of unidentified items.
DOOR TRAP
Fortunately, I didn't actually break the door down. I can just wait for the blindness to wear off in a few turns.
TENSION ROOM
h
Lizard man
Threat Level: 2/10
Special: Vulnerable to fire
Corpse: Edible, no effect
I AM AN OUT OF DEPTH ENCOUNTER, BITCHES
LEVEL UP
All my skill increases this level go into maxing out Detect Item Status and Healing!
Next level at 7784 experience.
Lots of loot! Mostly axes, because that's what the gnolls fight with.
Gonna picket the water and the large ration, and try out some of these weapons.
There were two ego weapons in the pile! Lucky me.
The Battle Axe of the Eagle grants me +5 speed and +4 perception to wield. The broadsword of thunder has a chance to stun opponents.
This is a tough call, but the fact that my name is Axebeard means I'm swapping in for the Battle Axe of the Eagle. Holding on to the thunder sword, dropping the others.
h
Black Hurthling
Threat Level: 2/10
Special: Wields hand crossbow
Corpse: Edible, no effect
k
Kobold shaman
Threat Level: 2/10
Special: Energy bolts
Corpse: Increases mana, sickness
Never eat a kobold. Ever. Sickness is the worst affliction a character can have aside from Dead.
Next: The rest of this dungeon!
