Sector 2: Reality

DAN
...get any farther without it. Remember that you're heading for a Tason called Krotera, as you may be able to convince him to make the Tasen and their spaceship leave the planet.

IJI
I MAY be able to convince him? You don't even know if this is possible?

DAN
Well, no, considering his reputation - but it's all we can do at this time. I need more information on a certain subject first.

IJI
What subject?

DAN
I can't tell you yet. I said earlier that we have to take this one step at a time; I don't think you can handle it all at once.

IJI
Hmph! I'm not a child. And besides, you still haven't told me why this whole alien invasion thing has gone unnoticed by the rest of the world.

DAN
Well, that's because their spaceship was really well stealthed, and, well... stop asking questions and head for Krotera already.

IJI
Alright, got it. Doesn't look like you're telling me anything anyway.

New game mechanic!

These Security Doors can't be kicked open. Do how do we get past them...?

By hacking them!

Hacking is a minigame that is hard to capture in screenshots, because all the obstacles flicker on and off erratically. Long story short, you have to draw a path from the top left corner to the bottom right corner within the time limit. The higher the security level, the bigger the grid.

You can also hack open these boxes...

And there is sweet loot inside!

This looks like a NEW WEAPON

Resonance Detonator
Damage: 1 HP
Reload Time: 5 seconds
Muzzle Velocity: 50 m/s
Requirements: N/A
Ammunition: N/A

The Resonance Detonator is basically an omnidirectional kick. It's only useful at all if you have high Strength...

By now, the function of the Crack stat should be self-evident! It allows you to hack higher-security objects.

And what's this strange device to my left?

It's a Nanoweapon Station!

I can use it to combine weapons via hacking to create new weapons.

Unfortunately, my Crack level isn't high enough to make anything yet.

New enemy!

Tasen Commander
Armor: 100
HP: 5
Weight: 6
Security: 5
Height: 2.5m

The Commander's only ranged attack is firing rockets - powerful, but easy to avoid. If you let them get close, their melee attack is quite dangerous.

Keep some cover between you and them, duck whenever they're charging a rocket...

And they go down! Not so bad.

Always a good idea to go for security boxes when possible, for extra nano, weapons, and ammo.

Oh yeah, I have a machine gun!

To be honest, it's not a very good weapon. Its only saving grace is having much longer reach than the shotgun.

This thing looks important!

What does it do?

It explodes almost immediately when damaged, is what.

The lifts we installed here aren't a security problem, they're downright lethal! It's only a matter of time before someone loses an arm in one of those things, or falls down an empty lift tunnel. Have they heard of doors? Even the humans had those.
Some guys have been busy blocking certain lift tunnels to prevent people falling into them, using the materials lying around in some of the human-made boxes. Speaking of which, why are there so many boxes all over the place, anyway?
The lift music is catchy though, it plays a lot of political stuff. "Welcome to Ciretako" always makes me glad I'm not in the Komato army.

There's something mysterious and shiny up here!

I can't jump high enough to get it.

This is a surprisingly common way to navigate in this game: Take a lift up a floor, go around and drop down to where it was when you found it, then fall into the now-open space underneath it.

Which is how I ended up here!

See those purple dots, by the way? Not just dots:

Blit
Armor: Invulnerable
HP: Invulnerable
Weight: N/A
Security: N/A
Height: 0.1m

All Blits can do is munch lightly on armor, but get a bunch of them together, and they're QUITE dangerous.

Into the teleporter!

Reports are pouring in regarding an individual called the "Human anomaly", who is believed to be a champion of the humans. It would explain why she uses advanced Nanotechnology that none of the other humans we've encountered possess; she's clearly special in some way.
It's still not known if she's cooperating with the Komato, but it's highly likely - we have to terminate her at all costs, or she might warn the Komato Imperial Army of our presence on this planet.
Some say she may be able to understand and speak our language - this may be due to her personal Nanofield, but do not be fooled if she tries to communicate with you. Kill her on sight and report it to your nearest superior.

Hmm!

Upgrade spree! I've got Health up to 3 and Strength up to 3, and also upgraded Attack a bit - increases the damage I inflict with Armor-based weaopns. It can also increase damage of HP-based weapons, but only at very high levels.

Upwards!

High concentrations of Nano have been proven to act as cybernetic combat drugs, dramatically boosting various features for a brief period of time. The only drawback of assimilating such "Nano Overloads" is that the result gained is completely random.
However, research suggests that the most powerful random abilities can only be earned by particularly aggressive subjects - a passive person could only gain the lower spectrum of the Overloads, more suited to survival and stealth. Conversely, a true berserker would only gain the most exterme offensive abilities.

LET'S SEE WHAT I GET

Awesome!

Or it would be, but only heavier weapons like rockets can be reflected.

New enemy!

Tasen Turret
Armor: 200
HP 1
Weight: 1
Security: Variable
Height: 1.8m

The most important number on that list:

Weight.

Speaking of weight, I'm strong enough to kick Scouts to death!

It only takes one hit, since a successful kick does 1 HP damage.

We've set up some turrets here, specifically designed to target humans. They won't shoot anyone with the proper subtroutine programming in their personal Nanofield. If the rumors are true that there's actually a surviving human running around here, she won't last long.
I heard the turrets in other areas were given some insane Nanoweapons. I don't know if they were designed for field testing, or if some of the guys around here think it's fun seeing humans getting blown to pieces.
The turrets' only real weakness is their ridiculously frail construction; you could kick one clean off its support pole.

Wheee!

Okay, I've done all I needed to here. Onwards!

That thing I just walked past is an extra life, functionally - the first time I die on the stage, I'll revive there.

Not that I'll be needing it in Sector 2.

Fighting!

This is what happens when you get close enough to a Commander to let them melee you!

It packs quite a punch.

It's a super-rare item!

Next time: Jumping around and finishing Sector 2!
