Fandom is fandom is fandom

I wrote this earlier, and I decided to tweak it and slap it up because of some other things about fandom, including severalstories posts about RL hockey fics. It's a post about fandom in general.  Warning, this is pretty long.  The brony gag is "And that's how Equestria was made!" Incidentally, I have it on the best of authority (his own) that Pinstar is a Brony ( Read more... )

I think that whole "but it's for kids!" thing is starting to be less of a thing. There's a whole generation of young adults in the world right now who grew up on Harry Potter and Nickelodeon TV (before it got lame) and Super Mario Brothers. As adults they still love this stuff and they are raising their kids on it. Why would anyone want to give up something they enjoy just because they are a certain age? Happiness has no age limit ( ... )

.... I kind of want to get you started on the differences between the two Lokis <.< >.> I really kind of want to get into comics, but I feel like I should only have so many hobbies at a time...
Fandom for all! :D

Hee, it's funny: the medievalist in the department finally saw *Thor* and liked it, but found the huge horns silly. Someone else in her facebook post said "yeah, and what about his eyes? He's supposed to have one green and one red eye!" So I posted back and "well, the horns are from Marvel. They're stuck with the horns. They wouldn't want to go with the red and green eyes, because it would be too reminiscent of Spider Jerusalem in Transmetropolitan. I'm sure a lot of readers went "huh?" but SOMEONE "liked" that.

Well, I can't draw, so---fanart is pretty much a no for me. I'm a writer, so I write. I haven't written much fanfic, but what I've written tends to be really firmly rooted in canon. I have one or two Harry Potter fics that amount to "what was happening offstage," like Neville preparing for the Yule Ball in a series of letters to his Gran, or Arthur and Molly sending Ron his dress robes. And come to think of it, both of those were written to reconcile book-canon with movie canon.

This is also probably why I'm such a bitch about borrowed Sims. Characters only ARE their fictional existence, so once the borrowed character is out of character, you don't have that character anymore. What you've got is a new and probably weaker character with a borrowed appearance.

That said, most fanfic sucks, and so do a lot of Sim stories, and so does a lot of published fiction, including stuff that makes a bazillion bucks.

Fans are passionate, and passion is good. Mostly.

Oh hey, I keep waiting in hopes that you'll show up on AIM and I can catch your real time reaction, but since that shall ne'er happen here is a link for you: Neth posted pictures of her pony collection.

Anyway, fandom! <3 You know my feelings about fandom. I love everyone and what they do, though sometimes I myself feel shame about things only for me. Sort of like how I'm not critical about how people write borrowed sims but I'm hypercritical of myself. *shrugshrug*
