I haven't watched the show yet, but I have friends who are HUGE fans and very devoted to the show. For the most part, I think the Brony phenomenon is pretty cool, though you're right in asking that the perverted stuff be kept out of reach of the little girls that are into the show.

One funny bit... friend of mine ran a My Little Pony RPG at a gaming con and all six players that turned up were guys. :)

Part of the problem is that YouTube's filter really sucks. I don't know if it's just that I know the fandom much better or what, but I've literally never just stumbled upon dubious Harry Potter stuff. When I've seen fan fiction or fanart that was way out there, it was at least under one and sometimes under two or three cover/cuts, plus some warnings, so if I clicked on it, it really was a case of "you asked for it." TV Tropes has all the scary MLPFiM round up under warnings; some of the fan communities are pretty careful, but many just assume "ah, this is for bronies only and no kids are here anyway"; and it's all kind of tough to judge because the same fan site might host wacko fanvids and also advice on how to customize your ponies.

Hmm. Pony fandom just might be a way to meet boys, although, nah, they're almost all a lot younger than me, so--

well, hmmmm.

I have just spent a sad proportion of the past day watching all of series two, having read this (and admittedly wanting to procrastinate badly). Curse my easily-swayed-ness. And Lauren Faust is awesome.
