Stella's eyes blinked open as bright sunlight streamed in from the nearby window. It took Stella a moment to figure out exactly where she was- she wasn't at Hogwarts, nor at home with Caleb-
Caleb.
The
events of the night before came flooding back into Stella's mind as she glanced around the room. Her mother had left the bedroom exactly as it had been when Stella left to study in America after finishing at Hogwarts. The remains of her teenage life were housed in this room, and Stella couldn't help thinking how complicated everything had become in the intervening years.
She stayed curled up in the bed for a long while, thinking over the night before. She wasn't sure exactly when everything had happened- everything had turned into a blur in her mind. The only thing that seemed to stand out clearly was the wolf (she couldn't think of it as Caleb right now) barking and growling at her, his sharp teeth bared in her direction. The next thing she recalled was laying on this bed, sobbing and shivering with fear. Apparently she'd fallen asleep at some point, though she hardly felt rested at all.
Stella looked at the window and sighed. The sun was up, which meant that Caleb had transformed back. Stella knew she needed to go to him, to make sure he was alright, to make sure he ate something.
But she wasn't sure she could face him, not after what she'd done.
Stella had promised Caleb that she would not leave him. She'd reassured him dozens of times that she loved him, that she was not going anywhere. Last night, when Caleb had been worried and telling her to leave, Stella had refused, staunchly reasserting that this was something they needed, that she wasn't going to leave.
How in Merlin's name was she supposed to apologize for not only breaking that promise, but also abandoning him when he needed her? What could she do, what could she say to make up for what she'd done? Stella cried at the thought, going over what she would say over and over again in her mind. Begging Caleb to forgive her, praying that he could.
It was nearly noon by the time Stella settled on what she would say, though she was sure she'd just end up crying and begging incoherently anyway. After washing her face, Stella made her way back downstairs to the fireplace, taking a deep breath before stepping into the green flames.
"Caleb?" she said tentatively, stepping out into the front room of their flat. Yes, he was probably sleeping, but that was no reason not to announce her presence.
