((This is Noy, whose connection to Stormer might be revealed if anyone asks Stormer about it, and she'd be drawn to this universe like a moth to a flame.))

There is little to be remarked about this little girl. She is perhaps nine or ten, with very flat blond hair, and she is looking at apples as Preston passes. She picks each one up and carefully examines it, though she does not seem to be looking for flaws, because the apples which make it into her cart are not the most ripe or the most shiny or the least damaged-looking. None of them appear so damaged as to be unusable, but her rationale for being so careful with her choices is still not in evidence. As she is just choosing her latest apple, Preston has almost passed by her. She looks up at him. Her eyes are very remarkable indeed. They seem at some point in the distant past to have been blue, but it is as though someone very small is standing behind each of them holding a chunk of the sun one inch in diameter. Her irises erupt with crystalline light. Then all of a sudden the ( ... )

The rationing center was always one of Mary’s favorite places in Libria. Using scents and essences were forbidden in the City, but provisions were not able to suppress the sweet smell of apples, peaches and other fruits were arranged on rack.
Inhaling the sweet scent deeply, Mary closed her eyes and imagined the place would have been before the third War... full of busting life, chattering.
Eyes closed, she did not notice the man until she almost bumped into him. She stopped short and looked up to him with stunned expression in her eyes. Vaguely, the man looked familiar to Mary... His partner, she realized. Shortly before his death, Partridge showed the file of Preston to Mary.

“Excuse me Cleric.” She managed and lowered her eyes. “I was careless...”

Preston shook his head, momentarily dazed, "Quite all right Miss-" He blinked "O'Brian?"

He shook his head, studying the woman. He had seen her in the evidentary offices, in fact-he'd seen her quite often with Partridge. However he assumed that it was a working relationship...

Hence his next move.

"You did not appear for questioning in relation to Errol Partridge's personnel file." Preston said, "Or-"

He frowned. Her eyes were wide and...

"You were not informed." He shook his head and managed a small meaningless smile, "I apologize Miss O'Brian. You were required to appear before a tribunal a few days ago and it appears as if you weren't informed."

He looked down at her cart, "Those apples look very ripe."

Noy is passing by with her cart of apples. She pauses as she passes Preston and Mary, and looks down into Mary's cart. Reaching in, she pulls out the shiniest apple. This one is rotten inside. Again, she seems unaware that someone might respond to her; she continues on her way, carelessly dropping that apple back into Mary's cart.

The summons! Mary bit her lips, fighting against her developing panic. Of course, the cleric remembered her from the evidentary office. Even if the Prozium suppressed the emotions of the inhabitants of Libria, it had no effect on their memories, especially not on John Preston's...
Mary heard stories on the talents of Cleric John Preston, this name was well known among the members of Resistance.

"I did not..." Her mind raced, trying to find a smart lie, when a small girl stepped to them and reached into her cart. "Hey..." Mary stared after the girl as she walked away, unable to suppress a small, nervous chuckle.
