This column gives a good summary of many of the things I found surprising at first about community-college students, as well as a number of the reasons I enjoy teaching there.

A few years ago - right around when I was leaving Carleton, so 8 or 9 years ago at this point - the Philadelphia Inquirer did a series of articles comparing the academic experience of students at Montgomery County Community College and those at The University of PennsylvaniaThe general gist of these articles was, I think, more that Penn is overpriced than anything else, but one of the things they did was take some first-year students in a physics class at Penn and had them take their physics for a week at Montco. The two intro. physics classes were using the same book (which is why they picked those classes) and were at the time of the experiment at approximately the same spot in the book
