Actually getting plot in there and have a story at the end not a paragraph. Many apologies for any mistakes in this. If you find any it’s totally my fault since my beta didn’t get enough time to beta it. However if you find a mistake or something let me know and I’ll fix it.
In The Black
Mal couldn't believe the devastation that stood 500 yards in front of him. Serenity was ripped apart and in a few large pieces, but not quite scattered across the open area of Nova Linda they'd landed on.
"RIVER!" Simon screamed. He tried to rush past Mal towards the ruins of Serenity, but Mal grabbed the back of his shirt and yanked him behind an area of brush cover, clamping his hand over Simon's mouth at the same time. Simon squirmed, trying to get away to find River.
"Son, if you value our lives as well as anyone who may still be alive on my ship, you’ll get quiet in a hurry. Reavers attacked 'em. The gorram Reavers, Doc!” Mal removed his hand from Simon’s mouth and turned to watch the ship for signs of further danger.
Simon stilled at that, "Reavers! Wuh duh ma huh ta duh fung-kwong duh wai-shung doh! We have to check on the others."
"I know. But we need to do this smart, Doc. Dong ma?"
Simon nodded, taking a deep breath to compose himself, but his breathing came out like a squeak when a barrage of gunfire erupted from the direction of Serenity. The gunfire stopped suddenly with a loud crash, and then the sounds of someone fighting like hell. While they listened it got quiet again. Then seconds later, a quick succession of shots rang out.
"Captain?" Simon's voice reached Mal with a quiver of fear in it.
"Dung ee-miao," Mal murmured while quietly and intently watching the remains of Serenity. As they watched, a series of thumps, bangs, and what sounded like dragging came from the direction of the cargo bay and headed toward the ramp.
A mutilated Reaver’s body suddenly tumbled out from the cargo bay and landed in the dirt at the base of the ramp, kicking up a cloud of dust. Seconds later, Jayne fell through the door and landed on the ramp with a loud thud.
Both Simon and Mal moved from their pathetic amount of brush-cover and raced toward him.
“Jayne!” Mal shouted as he reached the cargo ramp. “Come on, Jayne, talk to me. What happened?”
Jayne coughed weakly, which caught Simon’s attention. Jayne was never weak. Simon crouched next to Jayne, “Come on, Jayne, hang on.” Jayne was bleeding from several places, but the worst seemed to be a long deep gash down the entire right side of his torso.
“Mal! Mal!” Jayne coughed from his urgent attempt to yell. Mal turned from the cargo bay door and came back to where Simon was desperately trying to slow the heavy bleeding of the several harsh-looking wounds Jayne had acquired during his fight. “What happened, Jayne?” Mal asked his fallen crewman.
“S-sorry Mal. I’m so sorry Mal. It’s all my fault.”
Jayne tried to sit up further. “Stay still, Jayne. You’ll make it worse,” Simon said, putting a gentle hand on Jayne’s chest to make him stay.
Mal crouched down next to him, “its okay, Jayne. Calm down.”
Jayne had started squirming and pulled at the strap for Vera, which was still wrapped around him. “Mal. Take good care of her.”
“Jayne…no. You’ll be fine, Doc will patch ya up right good.”
“No, Mal. I’m dying, I’m gone. Take care of them huh, Captain.”
“Course, Jayne. Maybe not as well as you do though, but I’ll do my best.”
“Doc?”
“Yes, Jayne.” Simon checked one the larger wounds, which had slowed its bleeding.
“They’re gone, Doc.” Jayne reached out and grabbed Simon’s hands in one of his large ones. “River. Kaylee. Everyone’s gone,” Jayne paused for a minute before continuing, “Sorry, Doc. She did right good. Helped me take out nearly half of ‘em before they got her. I tried to get to her before it did. Wasn’t fast enough I suppose.”
He moved his hand off’a Simon’s and began coughing exceedingly hard. After a few painful moments he quieted and when he removed his hand from his mouth both his mouth and hand were bloodier. He was coughin’ up blood now, and he knew what that meant.
He looked toward Mal and continued, ”Kaylee and Inara did real good too. Worked together and got a few before Inara got struck from behind and they got Kaylee when she went to help ‘Nara. Zoë was still takin’ out the Reavers left and right, but she’d already taken several bad hits and when a Reaver nailed her right in her face, she just fell and never got back up. By then there were only a few of ‘em left. Got a couple pretty quick but the last one had a lot of fight in him.” Jayne glanced at the Reaver at the end of the ramp, “He took me with him Mal, got me good.” Jayne gestured towards the large gash in his side. “Sorry, Mal. They torn up the engine and screwed with the flight controls and everything before I could get to them. Serenity’s un-flyable, Captain.”
Jayne began wheezing and coughing again, but turned to Simon who still had a tear rollin’ down his cheek. “Doc? About Ariel…”
“Shhhh Jayne. I forgave you a long time ago. River did too, you know.” Simon smiled ruefully, “I was beginning to think she liked you too. Despite everything.”
“She couldn’t have. I was never good enough for her to want me,” Jayne whispered.
“God help me, but I believe she did. I overheard her and Kaylee talking about it last week. She was going try talking to you after we left Nova Linda. So you couldn’t run away from her.”
Jayne’s eyes went real wide and he began coughing so hard that Simon and Mal had to roll him onto his side so he didn’t choke. It didn’t help much because he got real pale anyway and when he finally stopped coughing; he looked up at Mal and Simon. “Mal? Sorry, Mal.”
Mal looked at his dyin’ mercenary then over at the Doc; Jayne had maybe a couple more minutes and was fading fast; he’d lost too much blood. “You want me to wave your folks, Jayne? Let them know?”
“Thanks, Capt’n. Tell Ma… tell her I… tell her it didn’t hurt and that I went out fightin’ huh Mal?” Jayne’s breathing was way too shallow.
“I’ll tell ‘em Jayne. I promise I’ll carry you back there.”
Jayne choked a couple times, and then just stopped. He stopped everything; moving, talking, and even breathing.
“He’s gone, Capt’n. You want me to try and resuscitate him?”
“No. He was in too much pain, Simon. I can’t let him come back to that. Besides, it wouldn’t even help him much, would it?”
“Not really. He’s lost more blood than we could safely replace in a transfusion.”
Mal looked back down at Jayne, whose eyes were still open. He reached out and closed Jayne’s eyes. A quick check at Jayne’s pulse-point told him that he was gone, and Mal stood up.
Simon looked up at him, eyes glistening with tears, “Captain?”
“Let’s go check the others, Simon and see what we can do for ‘em. Then we gotten get to work.” Mal reached out and brushed some of the tears off of Simon’s cheek.
“Get to work?” Simon whispered in a small confused voice.
“Check in town, see if anyone made it, they were surely attacked too. Get some coffins, and wave my crew’s families. Then…” Mal trailed off and looked at Simon again.
“Then… Mal?” Simon asked.
“Then we gotta fix my ship before someone gets a bead on Serenity and tries rainin’ hellfire down on us.”

Author’s Note 3: If someone is interested in continuing this story let me know because I was planning on doing more with this request but ran into a few snags. Also
prehistoric_sea, I hope this was good enough. I know it isn’t quite the Slashy goodness it could be while they’re alone on the planet, but I felt the need to show how I got to that. Like I said before I was planning on doing more with this, I just ran out of time and this worked as a decent stopping point. I may do more myself someday, who knows…
