As he headed toward the main entranceway he smiled and nodded at the students that he passed on his way to the lake. He rounded the lake towards the place that he always sat. With a groan he lifted his weight onto a flat rock and with a wave of his hand conjured a small pile of stones beside him. He picked on up and tossed it up and catches it a few times before skipping it across the still clear water. Okay, he thought, how to make this work?
Minerva strode down the walk way to the gates of Hogwarts. She knew that this was not Miranda’s home and not her world, and yet she didn’t want her to go. She wanted to spend more time with this woman. To be able to see things through her eyes. Those eyes that pierced Minerva’s very soul and would stay with her, she knew, until the day she died. But alas here she was having to say goodbye before she said hello.
Miranda was trying to keep up with Minerva who was currently racing down the patch, leaving Miranda to do an odd walk run thing that messed up her practiced sway of her hips. Finally she called out, “must we walk quite so fast?” And was surprised at the speed that Minerva stopped and turned to watch Miranda walk towards her. Once Miranda caught up, they resumed their walk at a slower pace. The silence was killing them but neither knew what to say, each being known for their ability to hide their emotions.
“What are your daughters’ names?” Asked Minerva when she couldn’t bear the silence anymore.
“I have two twin daughters Caroline and Cassidy who are in their freshman year of NYU,” said Miranda with a proud smile.
“You must be so proud.”
“Yes I am, what about you, do you have any children?”
“No, no children and I have never been married. I suppose I was married to my job. Where did you go to university?” Minerva asked, wanting to bring the topic of conversation away from her and her lack of romantic relationships.
“I didn’t, when I graduated high school, I immediately went to work for a seamstress and quickly and ruthlessly rose to the top. I am self made woman but it has not been without sacrifices. There are often times I wish I could return to the only place I was happy. But I rant, you don’t want hear about my life.”
Yes I do, where did you once feel happy?”
“London, where I grew up.” She looked over to Minerva and they shared a smile.
“I didn’t go to university either I suppose. I graduated top of my class at Hogwarts and entered the Aurora program and fought in the war against Grindlewald. After he was defeated Albus took over at the helm of Hogwarts and chased me down to take over his position. I couldn’t say no to my mentor and have been here ever since. But that is enough of the past, we are here. Please hold a picture of you house in a secluded place and close your eyes.” Miranda did as she was told and soon found herself embraced by Minerva.
When she opened her eyes they were standing in her small back garden under her tree. She moved to take a step foreword but paused at the last minute when she noticed that Minerva’s arms were still around her waist. She looked up at the tall elegant witch and allowed herself a smile. “Would you like to come in?” Miranda asked as she extended her hand to the powerful witch.
“That would be acceptable,” Minerva replied, in truth she didn’t want to leave right away. She wanted to spend more time with this interesting woman. She stepped back and allowed Miranda to lead her into the house. Miranda thought it would be strange to walk around the front and although she thought it was un-classy to let someone in the back door she had to.
They stepped into the kitchen and Minerva was stunned at everything around her, everything she didn’t recognize. “I am going to change, I will be right back. Feel free to look around.” And with that Miranda left Minerva for a moment. Minerva wandered around the kitchen peering at the odd equipment. She found a small rectangular black box on the counter and poked at it. All of a sudden it emitted a high pitch noise and Minerva jumped back. She heard lighter behind her and turned to see Miranda come over to the box and pick it up, “yes?”
“Nigel what do you want?…No I told you we are using the purple ones….yes that’s all.” She pressed a button and tossed it back on the table. “it’s a telephone,” she said and tried to find a way to explain what a phone was when Minerva said, “yes I know what a phone was, I have just never seen one like that.”
“Oh, I see. Would you like a tour?” Miranda motioned towards the doorway. Minerva nodded and took a moment to look at Miranda’s outfit. She was wearing a pair of dark wool pants that looked like she had been poured into them, and an off white blouse with the first two buttons unbuttoned. But it was the heels that made Minerva stare, deep red high, high heels. “What is it?” Asked Miranda as felt the other woman’s eyes on her.
“How do you walk in those shoes?”
“Very carefully, now come with me and I’ll show you the rest of the house.” Miranda walked ahead but made sure to put and extra sway in her hips. Minerva followed the woman and her eyes were drawn to the movement of her hips and the smell of her perfume. Stop Minerva, don’t go there. You are from two very different worlds. This would never work, and not to mention she is STRAIGHT!!
