Author's Note: Ah, I don't know them. This is just how I think it should be.

Amanda laid still on her side, sheer will the only thing keeping her from toppling off the edge of the bed. Keanu was asleep on the other half of the mattress. His faint snores crossed the valley between them.

A space created by Sandra Bullock.

Two weeks ago Keanu had gone to dinner with her. It was nothing, a friendly ritual since they’d made Speed together. He’d been so happy to let Amanda in, to explain why they met and the significance, that she sent him off with a grin and assurance of no jealousy on her part. How could she? It was like being angry at a kid for enjoying ice cream.

However something changed from the moment he came home. They had not made love since, the gap growing between them in places besides the bedroom. Amanda could feel the other woman, Sandra, everywhere. When Keanu ate in silence, retreated outside for a private smoke, suddenly locked the bathroom door. It seemed Amanda turned around and a distant, private man, though a physical clone of her boyfriend, had moved in.

She sat up, cold despite the multiple warm blankets draped over her. Her hands reached around herself, drawing her body into a tight hug. Sleep eluded her when her mind was anxious, and especially now that she wasn’t drawn up against Keanu’s chest, his breath gentle, warm, and softly fragranced by tobacco. Amanda looked over her shoulder at him, peacefully sleeping with just a touch of drool peeking out of his lips.

Gorgeous, isn’t he? Sandra asked, standing over him with a pretty smile.

Not startled by the sudden apparition, Amanda nodded. Like it or not she had to agree with the figment.

He likes it best when I stroke his hair back like this. Sandra’s fingers smoothed through his tendrils, her touch gentle and caressing like a wife with her husband.

Amanda reached forward, mimicking the hand motions. Almost immediately Keanu awoke at her real touch. She forgot he was a light sleeper, forgot that Sandra was just the jealous, insecure and tired aspect of her mind playing tricks. Keanu stretched out of her reach, his eyes perplexed though half open. He shook his head, trying to clear his mind and bring her into focus. The blankets slipped down his bare, hairless chest. Amanda went weak at the sight. How long since she’d felt it beneath her fingers.

“Time?” he yawned.

“A little after two.”

“What’s going on?” he rubbed his eyes; Amanda could tell by his tone that he was irritated at being awaken, but attempting to be civil with her. That was their relationship now, what it had been for the past two weeks -- civil. Civil was for married couples who didn’t fuck, civil was for cheating spouses, civil was for divorced parents who smiled at each other in front of the kids.

“I couldn’t sleep.”

“Are you sick?”

“No.”

“Did you have a nightmare?”

“No. I just couldn’t sleep.”

“You got me up to share your insomnia? When I have call in the morning?” So much for civil; his tone was biting now and not holding back. Amanda bit her lip. All she wanted was to touch him, to feel a chemistry surge between their bodies again. Was that so much to ask?

“Go back to sleep.” there was anger in her voice now too, and the hurt which drew tears to her eyes. She turned away from him, retreating to the comfort of curling up against herself. He sighed, but it was annoyed, speaking Now I have to deal with this? “I’m fine. Sleep.”

“You’re not … what’s wrong?”

“Forget it. You have call tomorrow.”

“Amanda, fuck, I’m trying but I’ll lose my patience easily.” Keanu propped himself up on his elbow.

“I don’t understand why we haven’t been connecting lately. You won’t even touch me and I miss that. I miss you. You wander around this house in your own little world like I don’t exist. But I do.”

“I’m sorry,” he replied, stunned. Clearly this is not what he was expecting her to say. “I must not have realized I was doing it.” Keanu sat up and put his arms around her, but Amanda hesitated to so easily fall in his embrace. She wanted to vocalize her apprehensions over Sandra and what happened the night they had dinner. But Keanu pulled her closer to him, pushing aside her wild hair to rest his chin on her shoulder. To be in his arms again made her issue seem so very, very insignificant.

“I thought you hated me. I wanted to say something earlier, but I was afraid you would break up with me.” it was as close as Amanda would get to the truth. Then Keanu spoke, his breath warm on her neck.

“When did this start?”

For unexplained reasons, guilt washed over Amanda. She couldn’t exactly target Sandra, knowing Keanu would anger. And what if it wasn’t Sandra at all -- what if he’d run into an old enemy, or had a near accident on his bike? So she kept her answer nonchalant.

“Two weeks ago …” she paused, hesitant. Screw it. “… right about when you went to dinner with Sandra.” Amanda held her breath. Keanu took his head off her shoulder. “What?” she looked behind at him, innocent. “What is it?”

“I … Sandra and I had a fight,” he explained. “She’s seeing this guy, and he’s no good for her, and I know she knows it, but she’s so stubborn. I guess I let it get to me. I’ve been meaning to call her, to fix things between us, but I don’t know what to say.” he looked into Amanda’s eyes, gently touching her cheek. “Amanda, I would never intentionally hurt you. If I was upset about us, I would let you know.”

“I know, I know … I guess I was just being stupid.” she tried to shrug it off easily, but there was no mistaking the glimmer of tears in her eyes. Keanu kissed her softly. The darkness of the room, leaning against his heated chest, the look in his eyes as their lips parted … Amanda felt like crying simply for doubting the intentions of this beautiful, committed man.

“I was being stupid. Are we okay?”

“Yeah.” Amanda allowed Keanu to guide her down on the bed with him, pulling the covers over them and snuggling in. She felt better being in his arms again, falling asleep with him beside her. “I love you.” she said the words cautiously, treading on dangerous ground. It was the first time for either to say it, and based on Keanu’s past, she wasn’t sure this was something he was capable of expressing.

Keanu kissed the base of her neck. “Love you too.”

And just like that, any abstract threat or daunting apparition disappeared. It was just the two of them.
