Author's Note: Ah, I don't know them. This is just how I think it should be.

I lean my elbows on the dirty bar, clutching in my hand a phone which is sticky from spilled beer and grubby hands. I nod a thank you to Russ, the owner, for allowing the call. His phone is strictly for business transactions, but with my winning smile, he let me take the call. Blocking out the thought of what diseases I’m currently contracting by standing behind the bar, I settle in to listen better to the caller.

“Hello?”

“Sandy, you have to get out of there.”

I plug my unused ear. “What? Ges, is that you?”

“Yes.”

“How did you know I was here?”

“That’s precisely the problem. The paparazzi are coming to the bar tonight. You have to get out of there.”

I sigh. “You‘re so paranoid. They’re always here.”

“It’s different this time. They’re coming in swarms.”

“How do you know this, exactly?” I turn my back on a man attempting to order a round of beers.

“You’re on Hard Copy. You and Keanu both. They think you’re an item. At least, they’re hinting at it. Everyone will be trying to get a shot of the two of you together.”

“You’re ridiculous. I’m not leaving because some rag of a TV show is spouting lies.”

“You two are the feature story! They say you’re gaga for him! They have the exclusive, uncut and uncensored!!” her voice hits an unnatural high note that pierces my eardrum.

“All right, all right, I get it. I’ll leave once they start their set.”

“You’ll leave NOW. I’m sure the media’s already polishing their lens outside the door.” I can see Gesine’s fierce expression and crossed arms in my mind. For being the younger one, she sure can get bossy.

“Fine. I’ll go home now.”

“No, you’ll come here. That way I’ll know for sure that you didn’t stay.”

“But--”

“I’ll see you in twenty.” she hangs up and the dial tone rings irritatingly in my ear.

“Thanks Russ,” I mutter hanging up as well. “That’s one call I really wanted to get.”

As I maneuver through the growing crowd to the back of the small club, I think about the new rumor. Me, gaga over Keanu? It’s not that the possibility of us never entered my mind, but him daily putting me in a headlock sort of ruins the idea. Plus there’s the cluster of women who are itching to get near him, and his on/off romance with Jen. I shake my head before I completely resort back to high school behavior. It’s simply a case of a slow news day, and I’m only leaving to rest Gesine’s worries.

“Keanu?” I knock hard on the door of the back room where he and the rest of the band are tuning their instruments and resting before their set. I wonder if he can hear me and knock again. The music quiets considerably.

“Is somebody at the door?”

“I think there is.”

“It’s me!” seconds later the door swings back just enough for Keanu to fit in. My heart pounds against my rib cage. That tabloid has you all shook up. Relax. I smile big to make up for my momentary absence. “I have to go.”

“What? Why? We haven‘t even started yet.” he steps out into the hall, closing the door behind him.

“Gesine just called and …” I trail off, caught off guard by his expectant face. He’s so innocent. He has no clue that his good intentioned invitations to gigs have sparked a fire. We’re friends, in his eyes, and me leaving because of a rumor may suggest that I feel we’re more. Which we’re not. Mostly definitely not.

“Sandy?” he touches my arm. “Is everything okay?”

I can’t do this. I’ll let his publicist yell at him about it over the phone tomorrow. “I, uh, Gesine.”

“Yes?” a touch of a smile hits his lips.

“She needs me.”

“Is everything all right?” his eyebrows twitch together. The barest of movements on his face have the amazing ability to convey an entire emotion.

“She’s going to be alone tonight and wants me to come over. Nothing serious.” I try to shrug it off but I’m so stressed in an effort to not be stressed over it all that my shoulders barely move.

“She could come here; she hasn’t heard the band yet and it might cheer her up.” this is him trying to get me to stay. It’s sad that after such a short period of time knowing each other I can recognize it.

“I didn’t think of that, but I already told her I was leaving.” I slug him in the arm, and he looks at me funny. I can’t control my bodily movements when I’m nervous. “I’m going. Call me when you guys have another gig, okay? I’ll be there. And stay the whole time.”

“Okay.” he reaches around and squeezes the back of his neck. The look is endearing. “I’ll call you.”

“Yes.” this is the part where we usually hug and perhaps kiss on the cheek, but the rumor has me fearful of contact and I stumble back a few steps in the dim lit hallway. He moves forward. I put up my hands. “I touched the bar.”

“With your lips?” my resistance quickly fades under his soft kiss. My fingers descend down to his chest, keeping him in position, and before I start to drift into a fantasy about him having me here and now against the wall he’s gone. It takes me a second to open my eyes.

“Um. Keanu Reeves in the hallway with deadly good looks.” when all else fails, make a joke. He smiles.

“Hmm.” he sounds and looks as if he’s about to reveal a cure. “More than friends? I think Nolan may be on the wrong track with that exclusive.”
