omg, this is exactly what I was thinking! PJ is really trying to make the Hobbit at the same level as LotR. He is trying to homogenize it all together into one big set of movies. I understand why, and I know that most people in the movie-going audience who have not read the books will not really care and will be happy, but at the same time I mourn the delight of the Hobbit that I know.
I heard that Tolkien actually tried rewriting it years later to make it more like LotR, and he sent the first six chapters to a friend. The friend said something like, "It's great, but it's not the Hobbit any longer," and Tolkien abandoned the project.
I also noticed that strange bit of G/G and was puzzled. ;)

Exactly. And it doesn't work, because the Hobbit isn't LOTR, it isn't an epic on the same scale, and its mood and tone are much lighter. While I can understand why PJ made the decisions that he did, I wish he'd risked disappointing a few non-readers and stuck with showing us the Hobbit as it is.
* Thorin Oakenshield is considerably more attarctive than he has any right being. It was actually a bit distracting, because I struggled to believe he was a dwarf. On the other hand... I may yet have to revise my stance on beards
I think you may be making a good point there... :-)!
